I’ve perioded on a really expensive mattress [angry]

Bought a new bed about 18 months ago, including a new mattress which was a grand on its own. I’m having hellishly heavy periods at the moment as I am perimenopausal, although think my jab has made things even worse. Went to bed last night with an orange tampax and night time pad, and still leaked massively. I had a mattress protector on, but not a waterproof one as it makes my night sweats worse, and woke up at 5am absolutely flooded. It’s soaked through my underwear, the bed linen, AND the mattress protector, and left a deep red blood stain about 8 inches square in the middle of the mattress.

I kicked the boyfriend into the spare bedroom (he was lovely and vv understanding), tried to blot up as much as I could, and then left a paste of bicarbonate of soda and water on it for a few hours, before then treating it with Fairy liquid. It’s shifted about half, but it’s still really noticeable. Is there anything else I can try? I’m gutted that my mattress is ruined, and that it looks like I’ll have to get another waterproof cover and start sleeping on towels every month too.

I used peroxide when my son had a nose bleed on his mattress.

littlebilliie · 05/07/2021 22:23

Keep reapplying bicarbonate of soda and if can position it in bright sunlight it will help.

Those children's bed wetter sheets are absorbent and waterproof

Cocopogo · 05/07/2021 22:29

Clean it as best you can but the mattress isn’t “ruined” it’s just going to be a bit discoloured under the mattress protector and bedsheet. It’ll still be as comfy.

Haybo26 · 05/07/2021 22:32

Try Mould and Mildew remover. Works like magic on blood stains.

Harpydragon · 05/07/2021 22:34

Salt brings out blood stains. If it was clothing you would soak in salted cold water., so I think I would try sprinkling with salt and dabbing with a damp cold cloth. Might take a few goes but should work.

No advice on the mattress but please see a GP about your periods. I had similar issues and now take tranexemic acid. It's changed my life.

TreeSmuggler · 05/07/2021 22:37

It won't be ruined, it will just have a slight stain on it. Which you won't see unless you are changing the cover. Don't worry, it's a mattress not a family heirloom, it's for sleeping on and these things happen.

Guavafish · 05/07/2021 22:37

Bleach soaked cloth - leave for 1-2 hours

Do not do this.

This ^

It’s awful if you are prone to peri flooding. Very unpredictable.

SpacePotato · 05/07/2021 22:43

These would work under your fitted sheet.

Priorities! Your mattress will support you for years to come. Get your periods sorted - a hysterectomy = trouble free nights!

SweatyBetty20 · 05/07/2021 22:43

Thank you for the suggestions - am going to try them all! Think I am irrationally upset because apart from a house and car I think it’s the most expensive thing I’ve ever bought and I saved up for a year to buy it. I live on my own and am doing up my falling down house so there isn’t much spare money at the moment.

I’ve also discovered that Dunelm do a terry waterproof cover that doesn’t seem to rustle or make you sweat, according to the reviews, so I will definitely be click-and-collecting this week! God, being a woman is shite sometimes….

And will mention to GP! Just changed HRT so due a review in 6 weeks, will definitely bring it up.

I’ve used tena bed pads in the past rather than a towel.

feliciabirthgiver · 05/07/2021 22:49

I find Dr Beckmans carpet stain remover great for using on my mattress too.

HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 05/07/2021 22:50

I ruined my weeks old mattress when I had my miscarriage. I'd being meaning to buy a mattress protector but never got around to it and then I found out I was Pregnant and stupidly thought I wouldn't need one for 9 months. I did try towels and bin liners and also inco sheets to give at least a little bit of protection but I toss and turn that much it was pointless. However I have post miscarriage and awful heavy periods (non existent at the moment after AZ jab) discovered that wearing the Tena pull up pads makes a hell of a difference. Sometimes I put a normal sanPro inside it as well although they're fine without too, but since using them I've not had any issues. Yeah they aren't very classy looking but IMO for the sake of 5-7 days a month and not leaking all over my bed I really don't care

barneymcgroo · 05/07/2021 22:51

I have a single flat mattress protector - waterproof, but no rustling, and you wouldn't know it was waterproof. Feels like brushed cotton both sides. Used it when breastfeeding babies, as I'd leak or they would. Single size, so big enough to deal with the majority of things. Think made by hippychicks.

ILikePizzaAndWine · 05/07/2021 22:52

Wuka period pants changed my life x

Nannyamc · 05/07/2021 22:53

Salt is your friend. Apply directly to stain .Leave 12 hrs dry use nail brush. If it is still there repeat . Do not use water as it will spread . Then use vanish soap as dry as you can. Hoover after a couple of days should work.

IHaveBrilloHair · 05/07/2021 22:53

This is awful for, you, as Pp's have said, get help.
Your mattress isn't ruined though, it has a stain on at worst which won't affect it at all.

IncessantNameChanger · 05/07/2021 22:53

Look at brolly sheets op. I have them for my kids. They are plastic or rubbery.

My mattress is stained from the kids having accidents in my bed then dh spilling a cup of coffee on it, I dread the day we need to dump it

Perfectlystill · 05/07/2021 22:54

Get a Mirena. My periods were like this and it changed my life.

BobbidyBob · 05/07/2021 22:56

Another vote for period pants, I use Modi Bodi max absorbency and a tampon together at night.

crochetcrazy1978 · 05/07/2021 22:57

Salt and cold water scrubbed in. If that fails then hydrogen peroxide
