Cooking smells

My husband does a lot of cooking and quite often cooks bacon/sausages, curries etc.

Our house always just smells a bit 'fatty'. Nothing you can put your finger on but just quite bleurgh

We have an extractor but wondered what else I can do to make the air smell fresher.

Open the window during and after cooking

Watching with interest. I hate that smell. We get it after frying food mostly.

We've used a 'cooks candle' which was quite good...bought it in a kitchen shop.

We open doors and windows but doesn't get rid of the lingering smell.

Have the kitchen door closed whilst cooking.
Open windows regularly to air the whole house.
Is your general house cleaning as good as it can be? Make sure all surfaces are regularly cleaned- blinds, tops of bookcases/fridges.

Light a candle close to the cooking area. I find it really helps.

Shall investigate Cook's candles.

I open the windows and doors all the time at this tome of year, but maybe should clean the tops of my cupboards Blush

This is probably a cleaning issue and not changing the filter on the extractor enough. Call a professional cleaner in and book a deep clean of the cupboards / extractor / skirting / flooring. The smell will go away after that

thisplaceisweird · 27/06/2021 15:19

Deep clean your surfaces with something hardcore.
Top tip... Once you've cleaned the tops of your cupboards, put newspaper over the top of them. Then next time all you have to do is replace the newspaper, so much less of a faff and nobody will see (you may need to trim)

If you are cooking bacon and sausages and other greasy things on the hob then you need proper clean after. Those foods tend to spit fat and get all over the metal stands, cooker top and up the wall and anything else in range.

Candles do help get rid of strong smells faster but only mask if not getting rid of source.

This for sure. Mine was really gunged up. After I cleaned the filter I could see the smoke/ steam being sucked up toward filter.

I also cook with door wide open and leave it like that

Flaunch · 27/06/2021 19:29

I have to put the extractor fan filters through the dishwasher if I cook fatty meat, especially lamb for some reason, otherwise the smell lingers for days 🤮

puginamug · 27/06/2021 19:38

Right. I've put the extractor filters and the hob thingies in the dishwasher.

Tomorrow I'm going to tackle the tops of the cupboards.

Use Elbow Grease. Best damned cleaning product ever made in my opinion

Hot water and washing up liquid is brilliant for cutting through grease and general kitchen gunk. I’ve found it far better than most products.

I had no idea that you had to clean extractor fans Blush until we installed a new cooker and the cooking smells stopped being a problem!
