For those that don’t own a tumble dryer...

Mine has just broke- can not afford a new one at the moment.

So how do you all keep on top of drying laundry?
We don’t have a washing line either!

Do you do a load of laundry every day?

Am I mad? Can you live without a tumble dryer?

@BlackeyedSusan

Arse. recuycling just got harder as they have withdrawn the service, so one bin bag space for two weeks of rubbish and recycling. yeah, that's going to work.
So ... put your damp clothes out for recycling and buy some dry ones?Hmm
BlackeyedSusan · 06/07/2021 11:38

oops wrong thread...

thought I was on the hoarders one... Grin

ThatOtherPoster · 06/07/2021 11:44

We don’t have one. Partly because of the planet, partly because of the cost, and partly because I’m scared of the fire risk.

I dry things on an airer upstairs, or outdoors in the summer.

Laundry airer capacity varies a LOT so compare until you find one that fits loads. Mine holds 2x loads of laundry. (I guess about 8kg?)

Then get a retractable washing line that attaches to your garden fence. Mine can cross our (medium) garden 2 or 3 times.

ThatOtherPoster · 06/07/2021 11:45

Oh - if you’re drying indoors you’ll 💯 need a dehumidifier. Especially if you’ve got double glazing. I didn’t have one for a couple of years in this house, because I’d never needed one in my previous Victorian house, and we got black mould in all the bedrooms. 😬

ISaidDontLickTheBin · 06/07/2021 11:49

Always an extra spin after washing. Then either out on the rotary line, or on clothes horses indoors overnight with a dehumidifier.

OldTinHat · 06/07/2021 11:54

Never had one and managed just fine with airers.

Knittingnanny · 06/07/2021 12:00

How many of you are there?
Do you have an airing cupboard?
Do you have radiators?

I had a tumble dryer for a couple of manic years when I had 3 sporty boys at home.
Rest of time I’ve done extra spins, airers indoors with window open a fraction or dry outside and then into airing cupboard. In the winter I might put small items like socks etc over the radiators for an hour . There are only 2of us now
Not sure I agree with posters who said save up the laundry. I do a load when I think it’s reached an airers worth if it is an indoor drying day.
As I have the time now, I mainly try and do laundry on “ a good drying day”
Not sure I’d do without a tumble dryer if I didn’t have an airing cupboard or was doing laundry for a big family.
The only thing I miss a tumble dryer for is finishing off towels to soften them up.

Ariela · 06/07/2021 12:32

We do have a tumble drier, but I only rarely use it and then just when the sun shines (we have solar).
What I do have is a celling fan in the kitchen. Dries an airer full of washing in 3-4 hours in summer.

HearMeSnore · 06/07/2021 12:33

I have a drier but at this time of year I rarely use it. An outside line does the job better, sometimes on a warm breezy day it's actually faster, too. Even a tiny garden can manage a stretch of washing line, but if it really isn't an option then an upright airer near an open window (on a warm day) or a radiator (on a cold/wet day) works just fine.

cookiecreampie · 06/07/2021 12:36

I use mine a lot though trying to cut down a bit. I use the washing line and a heated airer as well as the tumble dryer. I have a lot of washing so can't afford not to have a tumble dryer.

Oblomov21 · 06/07/2021 12:42

Never had one. Outside line. Inside radiators, 4 x racks, and a Lakeland heated airer which is fab.

DeadButDelicious · 06/07/2021 12:45

I've not had a drier for a good few years now and I get by just fine. I peg out when able but we get a lot of rain in the northwest so for a good chunk of the year we use a maiden or the radiators. It does mean I have to do smaller loads more often though.

PuppyMonkey · 06/07/2021 12:49

I’m a former tumble dryer diehard but I’ve had an epiphany over recent months and stopped using it altogether. I don’t bother with hanging washing on the line either.

In winter, I have two very large airers that I hang over the radiator in the utility room. All the washing dries within a few hours and radiator is on anyway so I’m not paying for extra electric.

In summer, I use the large Lakeland heated airer - switched off - and hang everything on that. I put it in spare room or in a nook on my landing.

I only deal with laundry in the morning when I have allocated myself time for the task . I do one wash a day. So I put a wash on. Then I take the dry stuff off airer and put it away. Then I put the new wet stuff on the airer and forget about it until the next morning.

I can’t be doing with having to put washing away as soon as tumble dryer is finished. I do it in the morning only.

StarryNight468 · 06/07/2021 12:49

Give everything an extra spin in the washing machine. Clothes airers and radiator wire things if I can't get it out on the line.

I had a tumble dryer for years, when it broke down I couldn't afford a new one at the time, I've just got used to it now and it's not a priority. My clothes last a lot longer and look nicer non tumble dried, I now also like the feel of line dried sheets and towels to go back!

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 06/07/2021 13:10

I dry indoors, bird shit prevents me drying outside 🙄

I use a couple of airers for the t-shirts, trousers etc. Dresses and shirts go on hangers. Pants and socks go on one of those special hanging things with pegs. In summer everything dries in 24 hours apart from jeans. Winter is more problematic as I don't have central heating.

Why are you doing a load of washing a day? Can't you reduce that a bit? Most things don't need washing after each use.

Nanalisa60 · 07/07/2021 23:10

Extra spin 1600 and check BBC weather app and only wash if I know it’s going to be dry next day. If it is going to stay dry put washing machine on before I go to bed, spin again first thing in morning, then hang on outside line. In winter might need to go on radiators to air after it comes in. I love a windy day or as I call it a good drying day get as much washed as a can on those kind of days.

853ax · 07/07/2021 23:17

Clothes horse and clothes line during good weather.
Only put in a load when I know space to dry them so if using clothes horse smaller load than outside.
Lucky have a dry house clothes dry very fast.
3 young children a husband who does lot sport always lots to wash never had a dryer

Nannyamc · 07/07/2021 23:17

I have a huge line outside
Winter and summertime i use it. Use dryer only for refreshing 15 mins.
It softens towels socks underwear. Minimal cost.

MorriseysGladioli · 07/07/2021 23:46

I'm going to put some out in a minute.
It's dry here until 4pm tomorrow, so the forecast says.

purpleme12 · 07/07/2021 23:50

Can definitely live without a tumble dryer
I've never had one
But I do have a washing line outside. But I only use it in summer months (and then depends if it's raining of course!) So basically they just all go on the radiators
I'm not really sure how often other people do washing but I do the washing at often as I need to
The worst time is at the end of spring/start of autumn when it's not cold enough for heating to be on so it takes quite a while for them to dry!
But I've never felt a tumble dryer is essential or anything

noblegreenk · 07/07/2021 23:59

Similar position as you. Tumble dryer broke early last year, we do have a washing line that I use from time to time, but since we work a lot I don't like leaving clothes out in the day in case of rain. I generally put things on the radiators and open the windows - this can be a nuisance in summer though. We came back from holiday at the weekend and I've had so much laundry to do but the weather is warm and showery! Therefore I've had the radiators on and all the windows wide open trying to get it all dry, but it's far from ideal! I'm considering buying another tumble dryer now, maybe on finance or installments.

HmmmmmmInteresting · 08/07/2021 00:02

We've got one but only use it in emergencies. Like literally a few times a year. I'm not a fan of them because they're bad for the environment, expensive and reduce the life of clothes.

EatingTheElephantInChunks · 08/07/2021 09:47

Interesting thread, OP, thank you.

For those pps who mention using a dehumidifier to dry laundry, can anyone recommend a make and model please, or ones to avoid, from experience?

ohnoisaid2much · 08/07/2021 13:53

@itsmeagainagain

I have a Lakeland airer for it about 10 years ago still brilliant and I wouldn’t be without it. Having said that it’s permanently up as I have the room to do that. It rarely gets plugged in www.lakeland.co.uk/21736/Dry:Soon-3-Tier-Heated-Airer Might not be the exact model think I paid £99 love it

Here's a budget alternative I wouldn't recommend using it straight out the machine though. Regular airer for a few hours then this finished the job
