Hi, sorry to be so gross but we have a problem with this and I didn't know if someone might know of some hair busting treatment! We both have short hair but I just cannot pull the stuff all out, it must be wrapped round or something. And it's all dirty dirty yuck stuff too. Mmmmm, nice.

Anyway, enough disgusting details, any ideas anyone?

barf!

I have a real hair hobia so when it comes to having to tug it out i am gagging at the same time.

No advice for you though - have you got a dp/dh who you could pass the job onto?

Maidamess · 20/11/2007 13:02

You can probably unscrew your plug hole and have a really good dig with something, wire coathanger?

We had a blockage of sorts in our shower drain (I have a VERY hairy husband) and Mr Muscle plug and sink unblocker did the trick.

MrsBadger · 20/11/2007 13:03

keep pulling
or unbend a coathanger and fish with the hook

southeastastra · 20/11/2007 13:03

tweezers - love that job.

2sugars · 20/11/2007 13:03

3 layers of paper towel, assemble on hole, gather and pull, screwing up paper towel as you go and replacing with another. Have an empty bag to hand.

Do not look.

MorocconOil · 20/11/2007 13:03

It's about one of the only jobs my DH does, mainly because I just won't.

I think he uses a toothbrush to drag them out. Not mine though I hope

persephonesnape · 20/11/2007 13:04

i use tweezers. grab and pull and boak!

then i soak them in dettol overnight. i don't even think they are tweezers that i ever use on myself, it's just for peace of mind that i might one day get them muddled up.

jangly · 20/11/2007 13:04

Put a knitting needle in the plug hole and scrape it round and round the sides of the hole. This seems to dislodge it and you can pull it out. Have the lav lid and seat up ready to dispose of the muck as it is truly horrible.

I've just bought something to sort our shower out as it gets very yucky and DH doesn't clean it properly. I only shower once in a blue moon, I prefer baths so I refuse to fish all his hairs out - ewww. Apparently it dissolves the hairs so no more fishing!

It is called Buster Bathroom Drain Cleaner and I got it from Sainburys. It says it clears hair, sludge, germs and smells from bathroom plugholes and pipes.

I hope it works!! It had better do, it cost about £2.50 and you need the whole bottle to do the job.

MascaraOHara · 20/11/2007 13:25

Run a cotton bud (firmly) around each edge.. once you've hoisted some out pull & pull & Pull.. then go and buy yourself a lovely little plug coverer like I have which stops hair going down the plug hole and lets you just tip it away (in a nice tidy lump) after each shower/bath.

I will search and see if I could find one - they are pence and are fabulous!

Elf · 20/11/2007 13:28

Well, not only was that a quick response everyone but I have had such a laugh. I hadn't realised what a common affair it was, but of course, why wouldn't it be? thank you so much, I am going to try some of the suggestions, ending with BUSTER BATHROOM DRAIN CLEANER!! Whoa!

Sink and plughole unblocker stuff - half a bottle left for a good few hours...

I have a hair phobia too and couldnt face all that hair and soap scum..bleurghhhhhhhhhh

MascaraOHara · 20/11/2007 13:31

Something like this I didn't get mine from lakeland though - got it from a pound shopper I think

GrandMasterHumphreyLyttelton · 20/11/2007 13:40

Immac down the plughole.

The word 'Immac' unaccountably fell out of my head, as did 'depilatory creams' and 'hair removal' so I googled 'hair melter' until I found 'Immac.'

No doubt by now you have solved your problem, moved house and gone bald from old age in the time it took me to post an answer....

EmsMum · 20/11/2007 13:45

I have long hair ...

tweezers. I would advise getting as much out manually as possible before chemical means in case you just dislodge a lump and it blocks the pipe. Like I did once.

Then get, not the thing above but a different thing from Lakeland called a dossil.
www.lakeland.co.uk/product.aspx/!21248_21250 ... a bit cheaper and really easy to de-hair.

fuzzywuzzy · 20/11/2007 13:54

hoover them up once the plug hole is dry...apparantly it works.

Bewilderbeast · 20/11/2007 13:56

Use a crotchet hook. Once you've hooked a bit up so that you can get hold of it put some rubber gloves on and yank it out.

laura032004 · 21/11/2007 07:18

Second the vote for a plug hole guard. Makes things a lot less yukky! I just empty before I have a shower (so it's all dry) - wipe round with a tissue, and tip down loo.

We used to have massive problems before we got the guard, as I lose lots of hair post-pg (hormones?), so it really clogs up our whole drainage system. I tried Mr Muscle type treatments, but in the end we got a plumber out (Navy house, so we don't pay ) who poured a whole bottle of very very nasty stuff down, which worked a treat. You could probably buy it from a hardware shop. Once clear, start from scratch with a guard.

pud1 · 21/11/2007 13:32

i have long hair and it always gets stuck in plug hole. immac is deffinatly the best way. buy a cheap version, squeeze a big blob down, leave for about 30 mins and rince. job done

sandyballs · 21/11/2007 13:38

Ooohhh, I love this job, picking out old manky hairs from the plug. Particularly when they are all congealed in a ball. Is there something wrong with me .
