Any advice on getting rid of cat wee smell in carpet in new house?

We moved house a few weeks ago, and previous owners had cats that have had accidents in some of the corners on carpets. They tried to clean up at the time (I presume), however despite us using some vanish carpet cleaner when moved in, the smell is still lingering (and is worse on warm days). Does anyone have any advice on getting stale cat wee out of carpets, or do we need to get a new carpet?

You will need to lift the carpet and clean the floor and underlay with a neutralising product. Pet shops sell different ones. It will have soaked through.

You can also rent a rug doctor machine and buy the pet urine carpet cleaner to go with it, there are special cleaners with enzymes that neutralise the pee smells.

I moved into a flat where 17 indoor cats had lived so I have experience of this! You can identify where there is cat urine using a UV torch, which you can buy on Amazon etc. The wee glows under UV light. For small areas I would suggest Simple Solution, which you can buy in a spray bottle in pet shops (Pets at Home has it). It’s an enzyme cleaner which is specifically designed for pet messes. You need to really saturate the area with the liquid and leave it to dry. Alternatively you can use a strong solution of biological washing powder, again saturate the area and allow to dry. You might need them to rinse it out somehow. Try lifting the carpet in these areas to check and treat the underlay as well. You might need to repeat treatments until the smell goes ( you will stop smelling it as well, ask visitors if they can smell it).

Many thanks. Will try some of these suggestions.

I second hiring a rug doctor with special pet odour shampoo. It got rid of a really strong smell when our cat was ill and weed on our carpet. Northing else shifted it.

New carpets. You will never get rid of the smell, and any attempts to will be a waste of money.

I agree, new carpets are your only solution.

You will never get rid of the smell and need to hope that the urine hadn’t penetrated the flooring underneath the carpet.
