How worn out do your kids clothes have to be before they get donated?

Do they have to be worn out a little bit or a lot? Is it something that bothers you?

If they are properly worn out, they are no good to be donated, unless for rags.

My kids wear stuff with holes in. It doesn't bother me or them.

Comefromaway · 25/05/2021 14:53

If they are worn out they do not get donated.

It would be when they are grown out of.

Whathappenedtothelego · 25/05/2021 14:55

If they are worn out, they don't get passed on outside the family.

Some things I'll cut up as cleaning cloths, the rest go in the bin.

I have a couple of friends I pass children's clothes in good condition on to.
I wouldn't give them worn out stuff.

Gliblet · 25/05/2021 14:56

I donate/freegle clothes that he's grown out of, not the ones he's worn out. Tbh DS grows so fast he rarely wears anything out Grin

I don't donate anything that has holes, stains, a lot of wear (i.e. is about to tear through), or is faded and looks really shabby.

rbe78 · 25/05/2021 14:56

I don't donate clothes I wouldn't be happy for me or my children to be wearing.

If clothes get holes in them and can't be mended I keep them for scruffy activities (gardening, DIY, camping) if suitable, and throw them away/turn them into rags if not. It doesn't happen very often anyway, as they generally grow out of them before they get too worn.

FourTeaFallOut · 25/05/2021 14:58

Worn out stuff become rags for cleaning or cut up for the craft box for the next round of...random things we ask your mum to put together by tomorrow game the school likes to play.

YouHaveNoAuthorityHereJackie · 25/05/2021 15:00

Between this and your thread asking about hand me downs op, this is a little odd.

kowari · 25/05/2021 15:04

Donated when outgrown. If they are too worn out for my child to wear then they would only be suitable for rags.

Flowerclock · 25/05/2021 15:06

I don't hand out or pass down worn out things. Between my kids and the tumble dryer, plus the fact that I mainly buy supermarket clothes, I'm doing well to get a few months out of the bloody things. I used to naively believe stuff would do DS1 and then DS2. The only stuff I've been able to have both wear is stuff my DS1 grew out of too quick.

faithfulbird20 · 25/05/2021 15:10

@Flowerclock Yh I get that too a lot of the supermarket stuff wears out quickly like a T-shirt has lasted around 3 months..it's shrunk and has faded and has paint stains... I wouldn't be okay with my 3 month old baby wearing it that in 4 years... no point keeping it...

Also things like hoodies that have faded...awful pastel colours...why do I buy them...

My dc grow like weeds so nothing ever gets worn through. Outgrown things get passed on to family and friends.
What a strange thread.

ILoveShula · 25/05/2021 15:22

Things that look to be in a salable condition goes to the charity shop. They rarely look brand new but they look nearly new.
Missing buttons and dodgy hems get replaced before they go.

Things with holes or broken zips go separately in a bag marked Rags.

Livpool · 25/05/2021 15:27

I don't donate worn out things - just if DS has outgrown them. I wouldn't donate anything I wouldn't be prepared to buy

faithfulbird20 · 25/05/2021 16:17

Apologies wrong choice of words. I meant 'get rid of' instead of donating...

OP posts:
Gliblet · 25/05/2021 17:02

Well, for get rid of rather than donating - I get rid of anything that is really uncomfortable or outgrown. If something is faded or stretched but DS loves it with every fibre of his being, then it stays. If it looks absolutely fine but one or two washes have rendered all the seams scratchy as hell (why does that happen? Why?) then it goes.

Franticbutterfly · 25/05/2021 17:05

If I wouldn't be happy to dress them in something now I.e. it looks tatty, it goes in the clothes bank or bin. If it is still decent, no stains etc, I take it to the mencap shop.

kowari · 25/05/2021 21:55

If we are talking about what to keep for a sibling and what to get rid of, if I wouldn't buy it again if I saw it for a reasonable price in a charity shop then I wouldn't store it for a next child.

Lindy2 · 25/05/2021 21:59

If clothes have been worn out I put them in a clothes bank collection container as I understand that they go off to be recycled into rags.

Stuff that is in good condition is either sold, gifted to friends or given to a charity shop.

StevieNix · 25/05/2021 22:03

I don’t donate anything faded, stained, bobbly etc - that goes into the rag recycling bin at the supermarket
Anything that has just been outgrown but is still in good quality I donate (apart from a few pieces I love that I’ve kept incase I have future children)
