Labelling and organising

I’ve just bought a label maker after seeing it on a show with Stacey Solomon.

I’ve gradually been decluttering my house and now I need to start organising. DH is awful at keeping lots of shit and his version of tidying is shoving shit in the nearest box/cupboard so that it’s all a massive pile and you can never find anything ever again. Hence we have multiples of the same thing as no one can ever find anything.

My thoughts are that if I can organise and label everything it is more likely that DH may put stuff back on the correct place and it will make it clear to DC where things belong (I am already teaching them to tidy up)

Can you hit me with how you organise stuff and what you label!

I’m thinking -
Kids medicine box
Adult medicine box
Kids snack box
Dry goods like pasta, rice and cereal can go into clear containers and be labelled.

Labelling the kids craft boxes e.g. pipe cleaners, stickers, beads, etc.

Labelling the kids small toy boxes. I’ve been trying to organise the kids toys into one box for duplo, cars, puzzles, little people, play food, etc.

Old usb sticks - so that I know what is on them.

Cables - so that I know what cable is for the router, tv, TiVo box etc.

Now it’s arrived I’m struggling to think of things to label. Please can you super organised people advise me what to label to organise my life!

Cleaning supplies, sewing supplies, tools, light bulbs, batteries, power cut supplies box, anything and everything really!

I bought a label maker last year thinking I’d label loads of things to get more organised and it was handy when the kids went back to school and everything had to be named because they weren’t allowed to share anything. In reality the only things I’ve used it on are the tops of plugs to save plugging and unplugging the wrong thing all the time, usb sticks and chargers. I gave up trying to keep the kids toys organised years ago and as long as it’s put away and isn’t all over the floor I don’t see much point in trying to keep it all separate, they play with them all together anyway.

I haven’t really bothered in the kitchen as I bought nice clear storage canisters that fit the cupboards nicely and it’s easy to see what’s what, except for things like icing sugar and cornflour which could get mixed up.

Sorry, I’m probably not the right person to answer but I had great ambitions of having a brilliantly organised home but now I think it would just have me more stressed out that things weren’t in their designated area if I went around labelling it all.

I think labelling food that is in a clear plastic container and easily identifiable is a waste of time, but stuff like protein powder etc that could get mixed up is worth doing. Kids stuff yes, and like @Wafflehouse I label my plugs so you know which appliance you're unplugging.

I haven't hit a labeller machine but lots of things are labelled - I have all my dry ingredients like pulses, flours, sugars, rices etc in Kilner jars (I've got black labels on those and written with white chalk pen). Then in the utility I've got plastic wicker type baskets labelled with luggage tags - each shoe cleaning, cloths, bags, silver cleaning, dog, candles, batteries. Some stacking sistema boxes in the kitchen treat cupboard for different biscuits, marshmallows for toasting etc.

Labelling plugs is a good idea!

I second the plug labelling. Switches in the utility room and garage. Folders of important documents. They were fine in marker though Smile. We have those pull out plastic baskets with a handle in cupboards so they're labelled - eg kid medicine, first aid, cold and flu etc.
