How long do you spend cleaning?

And do you do it all in one go or a bit each day? Anyone got any routines to follow?

I have a 5 bedroom house and usually spend 3 hours or more cleaning a week in one go but due to shift pattern changing I don’t think this is going to be possible anymore, however I love knowing it’s all fresh and clean in one hit but wondering whether it would make more sense to do a bit daily instead.

I do it all in one go on a monday. 3 bed house and takes about 3 hours top to bottom. I do bits and Bob's everyday through out the week to keep on top of it but like you I love that feeling of it all being fresh at the same time x

Gottalovesummer · 18/05/2021 18:14

Definitely all in one go

Couldn't bear the thought of cleaning every day.

Lostinthewilderness · 18/05/2021 18:22

5 bedroom house here

Every day I do a basic laundry load, empty bins etc and then I just keep things clean and tidy as I go along which is minimal effort.

Then once every 4-6 weeks I do a deep clean.

Probably only hoover whole house once a month (admittedly only 3 of us live here and no pets)

Regularly get compliments on my house & it’s often described as immaculate!

Trick is not to hoard loads of clutter so cleaning is quick & easy & keep it tidy as you go.

OccaChocca · 18/05/2021 18:37

I used to do it all once a week.

I currently do a bit every day but it never really feels so sorted. I have a day off tomorrow so might do the lot tomorrow!

hanketypankety · 18/05/2021 18:38

I'm interested in this 'deep clean' option. What do use guys do specifically for a thorough clean?

Canyoureallymakemethin · 18/05/2021 18:42

A bit each day loosely following TOMM

Then I don't have to spend half a leisure day cleaning!

donutosaurus · 18/05/2021 19:11

Another vote for TOMM - makes it much more manageable.

BeachWaves2 · 18/05/2021 19:24

TOMM?

MrsTophamHat · 18/05/2021 19:28

Mine is never clean all at once these days Sad. I would say I spend cumulatively an hour per day cleaning kitchen/play room area, mostly after the children have gone to bed.

The rest of the house sort of gets done as I go; there's no real pattern to it. It's rarely at the point where I'd be embarrassed if someone came round, but I can't remember the last time every room was spotless at once.

MrsTophamHat · 18/05/2021 19:31

Have to also second the minimalist approach where possible. I've taken my kitchen counters right back to just microwave, fruit bowl and kettle. Everything else is in a cupboard and comes out only when needed. It definitely helps with keeping it clean when it's just an empty counter.

The Organised Mum Method

MirandaMarple · 18/05/2021 20:23

TOMM has changed my whole attitude to cleaning.

20-30 minutes per day Mon-Fri in specific areas and 10-15 minutes 7 days a week in high traffic areas. A Friday is a 30 minute focus on an eight week rolling routine.

It's an effective concept which is easily adaptable. It helped that I started following it when I moved and I'd done all my decluttering beforehand, too.

Nuggetnugget · 20/05/2021 12:57

I'm off today. I haven't spent the whole day cleaning but I have been chipping away at jobs all day (sorting clothes and pulling out beds and getting stuff into bags for the charity shop) Sad
I could clean every single day. Might start the TOMM

thelegohooverer · 29/05/2021 09:51

My dream is to have my whole house clean and tidy at once. I’ve been working on making it more cleaning friendly by decluttering, keeping surfaces clear, organising furniture for easier hoovering etc. 3 hours wouldn’t make much of a dent so I do little and often.

I like the TOMM concept but I just can’t follow a schedule - it sets off my inner teenage rebel. But I have daily non-negotiable tasks, jobs that I have to get round to weekly but not on set days and I’m working on being more consistent about the non-essential rooms.

caringcarer · 29/05/2021 09:58

I have a cleaner for 2 hours twice a week and she cleans all general areas kitchen, dining room, lounge downstairs WC, hall , stairs, landing and 1 child's room. I clean 1 bedroom and bits of cleaning and laundry every day including vaccuming general areas everyday but honestly the house is never pristine or immaculate as I have 1 SN child who makes a mess, 2 dogs and 5 cats but muddy paw prints and all I would not be without them.

BillieSpain · 29/05/2021 10:10

Decluttered eveything as recently moved. I threw away everything. It was horrible at the time, but lovely feeling now.

I really don't worry about cleaning, I have a dog, live in the country and it is permanantly needing sweeping. 3 bed villa.

So, I do 15 minutes a day, kitchen always cleaned while I am cooking main meal (don't count that) and 45 minutes throughout house on a Friday. That's it. That's all it's getting! DD and DH clean their own rooms. DD empties dishwasher.

Basically it is just a 'lick and a promise' as my Grandma would say!

Laundry/school uniform is done Friday night.

OrangePowder · 29/05/2021 10:18

When my life's running at it's most smooth I have loads of micro routines, so getting the housework done just happens, like brushing your teeth. I'm much better at a quick 15 mins or so in the morning than when I have more time, so a good Monday for example would be:

Get up
Brush teeth
Wipe round sink and loo after brushing teeth
Shower and dress
Hang out the laundry I did last night while porridge cooks
Breakfast
Mop kitchen floor before leaving for work

Another day, it might be dust downstairs instead of mopping

I do one "job" in the kitchen whilst dinner cooks every evening. Maybe clean the window, or the microwave or the fridge.

Eufy Vacuum cleaner is life changing. He gets on with that while I do the other bits.

You do need to do everything regularly though, it all goes pear shaped if these quick jobs become big jobs because everything's filthy
