Mould in water bottle

My son just emptied his room out and brought down a reusable water bottle , still had some water in whilst emptying it o noticed that there is black/ green mould almost furry kind on the inside of water bottle, he insists only been in room a couple days and had just water in , although most likely could of been used for smoothie previously but would of gone through dishwasher.
Can mould grow in just water and on aide of plastic bottle
I emptied remainder of water down toilet
Whats the best way to clean the bottle?
Thinking hot water and soap to sit in it , then through dishwasher ? Or shall I just bin it?
Son has had upset stomach couple days so wonder if he has been drinking from bottle ?

Water bottles can grow algae inside especially if they have been in sunlight. Is is likely that it's been on the windowsill for a bit?

Moonshine11 · 17/05/2021 13:15

Bin it or a sterilising tablet

It was down by side Of his bed , he said a week or so , but he is 15 so who knows?
I did make him tidy up his room at the weekend but he missed this one, although I also make him bring down bottles weekly and only allow water upstairs
The bottle he has used for smoothies but they go through dishwasher after, and he may of used for squash prior to water.
I have seen water bottles get mould in seals before but this is inside on plastic, as I was emptying the remaining water i noticed and some of mould was covered by water , didn't think it could grow in the water?
He is now banned from taking anything upstairs ,
Its dishwasher safe ? But says not to fill with hot water drinks? So wonder of i pour hot water from kettle will it crack ?
Haven't got milton or anything to soak in?

Ideally don't want to chuck it as its one that fits on his smoothie maker so not actually sure why he is using as a water bottle as we have those, I usually but ones suitable for dishwasher so they can go through there regularly

Just bin it

BoreOfWhabylon · 17/05/2021 13:20

Soak in bleach solution.

MinesAPintOfTea · 17/05/2021 13:21

If the alternative is to bin it then you might as well try boiling water (stand it in the sink if you are worried). Worst case is it cracks or melts, then you bin it.

cheeseychovolate · 17/05/2021 13:29

What about using some Milton?

purplecorkheart · 17/05/2021 13:32

I wash my water bottles and coffee cups with Milton. Also make sure you wash out the smoothie bottle before putting it the dishwasher I find mine does not get off every trace.

worriedatthemoment · 17/05/2021 13:37

@purplecorkheart i normally rinse it Through first As your right doesn't clean it throughly as I do tend to check and he hasn't made a smoothie for at least a month probably 2 so would of thought if was from a smoothie , mould would of been there already.
I have just seen you can buy replacement bottles , so will try some hot water and soap and then put through dishwasher and see of that works
Then maybe pick up some milton tomorrow as prob not a bad idea to soak there water bottles once a week from rugby etc in it

Vinegar kills mould so start with that. Some rice in the vinegar when you shake it will scrub the insides. Drain and wash as normal. Dry well. Don’t forget the lid or sippy tube.

1starwars2 · 17/05/2021 13:46

Don't ban him from taking drinks upstairs, he's 15!
Maybe get him to clean it out though.

worriedatthemoment · 17/05/2021 15:57

@1starwars2 yes I will ban him for a few days then he will remember to bring the bottles down, this is like his third warning.

Anyway when i went to wash noticed it had a crack in it so have just binned it as it will likely crack more once warm water is added.
Buying some milton so they can all have a milton bath once a week as use them a lot for rugby/ football .

You could boil it or put it in a microwave - like sterilising baby bottles.

flashylamp · 18/05/2021 20:40

He has been drinking from it so anything could have got in from his saliva - this is how mould will grow in a water bottle.
