Bottom up blinds hack

I have floor to ceiling kitchen windows looking out onto a quiet street... currently with vertical blinds, which I hate ( came with the house). I want bottom up blinds but can’t afford Hillary’s or anything expensive. I saw an IKEA hack which is pretty tempting.. install the blind at the bottom of the window/ run a narrow bar through the hem of the blind/ attach hooks to the desired height. Has anyone tried this? What could possibly go wrong? GrinGrin

Can you link to the hack to see what you mean?

I've thought of something like this. I only want to block out the street not the sky.

My DM had these properly installed - not a hack. She loves them.

Thank you. Yes, I want privacy but there’s a whole lot of light I’m not currently getting. Don’t want it to look insane though!

Honestly I think the one shown looks ugly and harsh!

Have you considered privacy film instead?

Pinkycheeks · 09/05/2021 23:52

I can’t afford to get anything done professionally- glad your mum is pleased with hers. Smile

Don’t go anywhere Hillary’s or the like. They’re stupid expensive and expect you to haggle them down in price.

Not sure about the hack though I think it’s effectiveness will depend on how often you’re going to want to pull the blind up or down.

Have you looked at Perfect Fit blinds from a BlindsRUs-type online supplier. They’re really easy to fit.

Mossrock · 09/05/2021 23:54

I’m not familiar with that hack, but you could always try a sturdy spring loaded shower curtain rail (one that you compress to wedge between two walls) and fitting cafe blinds or nets to it, then wedge it into the window. If you use heavy duty ones and the right tension they can work really well and not expensive or permanent.

Pinkycheeks · 09/05/2021 23:55

Thanks Deux for that suggestion... will look.... privacy film might be a bit too permanent for me.. good idea though!

We have perfect fit blinds installed upside down for privacy. The IKEA hack sound great! We had a glass roof installed on our kitchen extension and instead oh putting blinds up our IKEA hack was to cut a bolt of their fabric in half and fix it with hooks at both ends.

Mossrock · 09/05/2021 23:59

I have yet to work out how to make them pull all the way up though if that’s what you need. I was thinking apulley system with hooks too.
we use them behind curtains.

Not a great pic but that's a perfect fit blind fitted to pull up from the bottom.

We have a static film from Amazon.
It cuts to size and sticks up by itself.
We are renting so don't want anything permanent or expensive.
This has worked for us for several years now.

Had a good look into Perfect Fit blinds but don’t have the required frame. I’m going with film... thanks Lakeside.... I’d forgotten it existed and it’s the perfect solution for me. Smile

The film looks great! Much better than faffing about with drills :)

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 10/05/2021 15:33

What about day/night blinds? They have long strips alternating opaque/clear. You rotate depending on whether you want some or no visibility.

incenseandpeppermints · 10/05/2021 19:56

Can you get top down bottom up blinds which are also day and night? That'd sort everything.
