I'm a childminder who had a toddler throwing up everywhere yesterday. Scrubbed it all with disinfectant straight after, this morning sofa still smelt of sick (where I sit!!! ) so I sprayed all areas with dettol disinfectant spray. Thought it worked but that smell has worn off and now I still smell sick on the sofa - I'm pregnant and I can tell you, my hightened senses are NOT helping!!! Got no mindees today as a result of the bug and I want to get this all sorted asap!

Any advice on getting rid of the smell???

Bicarbonate of soda and/or fabreze.

nobodysfool · 14/11/2007 13:37

My ds puked all over the carpet and his mattress so i washed the area with washing powder then then repeated with bi carb of soda.Dab the area so it dries as much as poss.If there is any smell left just shake on some more bi carb and leave for a few hours then hoover off.It really works.

nobodysfool · 14/11/2007 13:38

then then?

Thanks, just done bicarb of soda, rubbed it in and leaving it now. All areas were already dry so we'll see, thanks for that

Cod - no chance, the disinfectants were fine until those smells wore off - honest, I've scrubbed like mad and sprayed the next day but thanks anyway

I think it needs to soak in for a while whilst its wet to have the best results.Good luck and congrats on the pg.x

looneytune · 14/11/2007 13:48

Oh no.....everyone else (got childminders in that section helping too ) said to do it dry then hoover off like shake and vac - too late now and it's all gone Off to open windows now heating on and just hope for the best!

Thanks about pg, just could do without the great sense of smell right now!!

Looney, if the first load of bicarb doesn't quite get rid of the smell just douse your sofa in it again. We used tons a few weeks ago when ds1&2 had a bug and threw up everywhere. It really does work - the old remedies are the best

My mum used it recently to get rid of the smell of cat wee on a carpet when their cat had a few funny turns in their bedroom (yuk).

looneytune · 14/11/2007 13:49

Best go and buy some more then!

Thanks

God yes, I used to always have some knocking around the cupboard for the odd recipe but I keep fully stocked up now - it is the worst smell in the world for lingering.

PS Congrats on your pregnancy!

looneytune · 14/11/2007 13:53

Well I got this for when ds had Chicken Pox recently (for his baths) and didn't know about this thing with smells so never got new one when it was getting low - will definitely have to stock up!

Thanks for the congrats

a saucer of vinegar (just left out, not tipped over the sofa)
my sitting room had a two-day mystery stink I wondered if a neighbour's cat had got in and sicked up invisibly and within half an hour of putting out Mr Vinegar, it had gone

looneytune · 14/11/2007 13:59

Thanks will try that.

Out of interest, what's the difference between baking powder and bicarb of soda?

OP posts:
Washersaurus · 14/11/2007 14:02

Baking powder has bicarb in it and other stuff.

Steam cleaning really helped when DS was sick in the car

snooks · 14/11/2007 14:05

My baking powder lists the ingredients as rice flour & raising agents.
The bicarb contains (errm, bizarrely) just bicarbonate of soda! So now we know

snooks · 14/11/2007 14:06

That must be the most interesting post ever

snooks · 14/11/2007 14:07

I can't believe I bothered to go get them out of the cupboard to check........right am off now to do something useful - good luck with the smell!

looneytune · 14/11/2007 14:16

Thanks - all I can smell is vinegar now

So...?

VanillaPumpkin · 14/11/2007 16:14

Also never use hot water on sick as it cooks the protein and sets the smell/stain.
Blot and scrape then dab with cold water then cover with bicarb and leave and then hoover off. Bicarb is MAGIC!!!!!

looneytune · 14/11/2007 16:19

Well, atm I can't smell anything but the vinegar which is now in my kitchen. When shall I hoover this stuff up then??

As for hot water - doh, wish I'd known that last night!!! GRRRR Thought needed hot to help the disinfectant clear it!!! lol

Anyway, going to tip away the vinegar now so I can see whether or not it's helped. Didn't need to open the windows in the end which is good :-)

I LOVE Mumsnet - you're more helpful than my mum with stuff like this!!

I know, hot water seems so sensible doesn't it. My sis tried to clear up her poor ds's sick in our front room (we were out) and used hot water. It was awful, however the bicarb did work for us after a few applications. The bicarb should absorb all the liquid really before hoovering I think.
