Drying washing indoors tips.

My tumble dryer (my current that is is only 2 months old) has broke. Someone’s coming out to fix it late next week! So I have so many days of no dryer. I have two dc with additional needs who create a ton of laundry so I’m dreading it.

Praying it’ll stay sunny so it can go on the line - have a full load out there today BUT it’s forecast wet this weekend.

I have an airer to use for bits that don’t go in dryer but it’s not big enough for a full load

I do a full load every day! May have to buy another airer - that I have no room for.

Tips on how to get washing to dry quickly inside when it’s to wet to put outside?

Sounds so trivial but I have so much washing every day 😒😒 I can’t really rely on the weather to be nice!

If you have a fan, opening a window and directing a fan onto it dries it very quickly

chittychittybang · 26/04/2021 14:54

Do you have curtain poles? I hang tops/t shirts on coat hangers and have them on the curtain poles that are above the radiators, so they dry really quickly. I also have one of the plastic contraptions with lots of little pegs on that I use for socks/knickers, that can also go on the pole, plus a few plastic over radiator drying racks.

Great thanks, good idea. I am so glad it’s happened now rather than earlier in the year where my washing would just not have dried indoors - my heating systems gone bust too - never ending. At least I can open windows up and I’ll dig my fan out the attic 😊

Hanging it as close to the ceiling as you can helps massively. Borrow a dehumidifier!! They dry out the air and it makes a huge difference.

Or ask someone you know for help. This is one time I don't think anyone would refuse if they could help you

Thanks. My heating system has also gone wrong but curtain poles are a good idea! Thanks! I’m so lazy and just shove most of it the dryer usually 😂

Bannisters are handy for towels and jeans
I have 2 airers for hanging washing but then I dont own a tumble dryer

Blakey24 · 26/04/2021 14:58

Thanks all. I’m so gutted. My last one which was cheaper lasted 6-7 years with heavy use. This one has lasted 2 months. Hoping it’ll be a quick fix! 😒

We have no tumble dryer and manage ok. My top tips would be:

Stop washing so much. A full load every day? Can you use towels for longer, make sure you are only washing dirty outer clothes, not just after a wearing etc.

Buy another airer. £16 from amazon. amzn.to/3aFBoYA
We have this one, it’s fine.

If you are desperate, for some loads drape it on radiators and put the heating on for a few hours.

4PawsGood · 26/04/2021 15:02

Missed about your heating, sorry!

Oh and do an extra spin when you’re washing it.

I wish I could manage without. My dc have additional needs and it’s crazy how much laundry they create. A full load is definitely needed. School uniform is cleaned every day too as they are Mucky children 😂 my radiators aren’t working currently due to a blockage. My whole heating system needs looking at it which will cost £££ so I’m all in a fluster - never ending! 😓

Agree about a close hard look at your washing and how often it's being done.
Kids - leave them in uniform after school. Items next to skin like knickers and t-shirts changed every day but trousers, jumpers, cardies checked if they are actually dirty. Each person has own towel - can be used for a few days if it's hung straight up to dry after being used. If showering, bathing every night then bedding we do fortnightly.
Also things like no food upstairs, in fact we have a rule that all meals and snacks eaten at table. We still get some spills but a lot less than kids that can roam with food in their hand. Also we don't change clothes if they have got grubby - they can stay in them till end of day as mine tend to be outdoor grime magnets!!!

NewMumma1819 · 26/04/2021 15:13

I also shove the airer outside if it's full and a nice day, can get 2 loads dry at once then if the line has washing on too! Backs of chairs are good for keeping jumpers and shirts in good shape (could also put those outside if using). And I use the banister for bed sheets/towels 😊

jillandhersprite · 26/04/2021 15:16

If you have a launderette it's worth using them for the massive load size and brilliant dryers - I do this in winter on bedding change days when i can't line dry...

Manzana · 26/04/2021 15:51

I hang items on hangers and hang them in doorways, especially upstairs as warm air rises. Can get quite a few items in a row and although in the way, duck your head, works really well for t-shirts, shirts, sweatshirts, even trousers etc.

motherofawhirlwind · 26/04/2021 15:57

Hang on hangers and I do some on curtain rails, especially if they're in the sun. Crack the window open slightly. Also on door frames if there's any you're not going through constantly. Most things dry overnight on there. Socks and underwear on the airer and stand that outside if the weather is nice.

Blakey24 · 26/04/2021 16:24

Thanks all. Mil borrowed my dehumidifier ages ago. Need to get it back...

extra spin will remove a load of water and reduce drying time.

put the airer in the draftiest part of the house. ours in in the attic, drafty and warm and I can dry 2-3 loads in 24 hours up there. (but usually only have 4 or 5 loads a week)

Hyperion100 · 26/04/2021 16:33

Dehumidifier is a small sealed room. Dry in 3 hours.

In your situation, I would take it all to the launderette and ask for a service wash. So someone else will wash and dry it. You’ll pay a bit more but it is worth it for the time saving, in my view. And anything that can wait until your machine is fixed or replaced (I am thinking bedding and the like), let it wait.

But if I were a neighbour or friend or acquaintance of yours, I would 100% do your drying in my tumble dryer for you. Please don’t feel you can’t ask for help.

FindingMeno · 26/04/2021 16:48

You can get wall mounted airers that pull out like a concertina and push back against the wall when not in use.
They're brilliant- you keep your floor space and because they're higher up the clothes dry quicker.

Blakey24 · 26/04/2021 18:56

Thank you all. It’s being fixed at the end of the next week (well hopefully fixed and not just looked at)! I’ll have to manage! I never put towels in the dryer so this makes little difference anyway. Whites don’t get out in the dryer either. It’s just the endless socks, pants, clothes, school uniform etc 😂 bedding I’ll wait for a sunny day and put it out!

Blakey24 · 26/04/2021 18:57

I may buy another cheapo airer to get by and then pass/sell it on when it’s fixed!

OP posts:
WellTidy · 26/04/2021 19:02

Seriously, OP. Take it to the launderette for drying. Think of the time saving!
