Disinfecting quartz worktop.

thelegohooverer · 24/04/2021 08:19

I’ve recently installed a beautiful shiny quartz worktop in my kitchen. The care instructions were to wipe it down with water and dry it immediately. And to avoid using bleach, household spray cleaners and even washing up liquid.

I clearly was a bit hard of thinking when I chose this over an eminently sensible, but not so pretty, laminate. But it was only when I was cleaning up after prepping chicken that my brain caught up. How are you supposed to keep it clean?

I’ve been merrily sanitising touch surfaces around my house for the last year and now I’m panicking that I’ve paid a considerable amount of money for something that can’t actually be disinfected.

Hoping some lovely mnetters can suggest an effective cleaner.

Did it say anything about ordinary bars of soap? (my go to when something delicate needs to be cleaned)

using lots of chopping boards will be your thing. Doesn't sound very practical for a kitchen.

FourTeaFallOut · 25/04/2021 15:55

It even wants you to avoid washing up liquid? Shock That can't be right, surely? Did the care instructions come with a recommendation for their own expensive product of unicorn tears that you can see the ingredients of?

I have a white quartz worktop and use method cleaner on it. Had it 4 years and its fine and still sparkly. You can buy granite cleaner which makes it sparkly

This might be helpful

LakeShoreD · 25/04/2021 16:05

That’s really weird that they’ve said that. I could perhaps understand bleach (never tried to bleach a counter top) but washing up liquid?! I’ve had 2 kitchens with quartz counter tops and under mount sinks so some splashing is inevitable. I always use Method antibac spray and it’s fine. My cleaners supply their own products and use god knows what, probably harsh chemicals, and it’s also fine. I’d just use your normal stuff and ignore what sound like daft instructions but I would recommend Method if for no other reason than it smells great.

Thank you all. Great suggestions.
Weirdly there was no attempt to sell me any unicorn tears!

We moved into a house with black quartz worktops in kitchen and at the beginning i was nervous so I bought a fancy granite cleaner but after a while I stopped being such a scaredy-cat (and, you know, cos life’s too short Grin ) and use a mix of dettol wipes and sprays, use kitchen roll to buff it so smear free and it’s always looked super shiny.

VerbenaGirl · 25/04/2021 18:47

I use diluted Zoflora on our quartz worktop and it’s been fine.

Redsquirrel5 · 26/04/2021 16:16

I use Method too but our kitchen came with a spray polish for the worktops but I just do that about once a week/ when I remember.

SunnyArms · 15/02/2022 02:20

I have to admit, that's some pretty weird care instructions. When we bought our www.caesarstoneus.com/blog/best-cleaners-for-quartz-countertops-reviewed/Caesarstone counter, they gave us sites that mentioned the recommended cleaners and tips to maintain the quartz countertop. Yes, acidic solutions and cleaners should be avoided. Instead, it's best to use pH-balanced and streak-free cleaners. I've heard others use Dawn dishwashing liquid but, I use Soft Scrub Liquid Gel. Maybe you should try it sometime. Also, don't use paper towels. Use microfiber towels to absorb the excess water.

GreenLunchBox · 15/02/2022 02:26

Eh? I bought a house with beautiful quartz worktops and was not given any care instructions. I've used different antibac sprays and washing up liquid every day and over three years later it's still as good as the day I moved in. I've never used bleach on it, but that would never occur to me Confused

Eco cloths with sliver in them means no need for chemicals. I got them from an mlm but have been really impressed.

Hairbrush123 · 15/02/2022 13:51

I use pine disinfectant and washing up liquid on my granite worktop. Never been a problem! I also use Sainsbury’s own brand of granite cleaner to just wipe away any dust

myusernamewastakenbyme · 17/02/2022 15:48

Ive got a granite worktop too....i find if i use any detergents on it, it smears...i tend to use very hot water and a cloth to buff it up...any food prep is done on chopping boards.

SunnyArms · 28/09/2022 04:09

Maybe it depends? Maybe it depends on how it was manufactured. Some react well to certain cleaners, like how you guys mentioned that detergents aren't helpful on granites. Plus, I think it depends on matching cleaning materials and the surface. I tried other cleaners that didn't go well with my Caesarstone countertop. Good thing that there wasn't any serious damage.
