Choosing a new refrigerator

Where do you even start? I really need a new one but I don't know anything about brands or reliability or which kind to avoid.

I know I want a freestanding fridge freezer as we only have a tiny icebox and with 3 DC, I need a freezer but I am not sure where to go from there. Help?

American Style freezers?

Have you got room for a double height fridge.. then separate room in a garage or something for a big freezer?
Good brands include Bosch, Siemens etc. We avoided a big American fridge but went for two separate

Look on a big site like appliances direct, measure your gap carefully then filter by width, height and price. Beko are a good option at the cheaper end, but as with everything you can pay what you are willing. I have an American style one with water plumbed in but no point suggesting it if you don't have space

Wow, that was fast Smile. Thank you! That's all really helpful. Especially for the good brands to look for.

I have done the measurements but wasn't sure where to start. Now thanks to you lot, I am not flailing and have a point to begin from. Thank you again!

Space first off! Most of the Americans have a huge water / ice tank that deducts inside space.

We've ended up with a beko of all things with a slimline water tank. Didn't want a beko but it fit the bill and can't fault it.

I think that's where I am heading. I needed a narrow fridge freezer and that seems to be the one that best fits our needs. I am now sort of excited about it.

Our Beko has been brilliant value for money too.

Go on one of the big appliance websites, you can often filter by % share of space, eg 60 % fridge, 40% freezer. Consider total height - a really tall fridge might get you an extra shelf or drawer but do you need it?

If you can live without ice or cold water dispensers, then avoid those fridges as the space used by the devices is disproportionate to the benefit unless you have space for a really vast American style fridge.

I have a Bosch fridge and I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another. I have had it about ten years. The fridge door compartments are much stronger than other fridges I have had.

I've got a Siemens fridge and matching freezer. Together they look like an American style fridge freezer but I don't have the water/ice dispenser thing as I had no need for that. I've had it a good few years and it's fine.

My old Zanussi fridge freezer lives in the utility room. It's 33 years old and still going strong. It's half fridge/half freezer and these days it's used as the extra milk/beer/wine storage. It was perfect for a family back in the day, until we had space for a bigger one.
