Recommend a vacuum cleaner please

I need a new vacuum cleaner as mine has given up the ghost. Have been reading online reviews, but there are so many conflicting views, can anyone advise me on a great vacuum they recommend?

We have a large house with hard flooring downstairs and carpet upstairs. No pets.

I've only ever had corded and bagged vacuums in the past, but find them heavy to carry around. Was thinking about getting a cordless, but not sure if they sacrifice power and suction for portability? Also worried that they might lose battery life after a while.

Have ruled out a robovac as we use the vacuum for the car as well as dusting etc.

Any advice on what you would recommend?

G tech doesn't get into the corners of rooms.

We have a dyson cordless for hard floors and a corded Sebo for carpet. The first day I got the Sebo the cleaner had already been and had used the Dyson everywhere, I went over all the carpet with the Sebo and was astounded at how much dirt it picked up. It has a hepa filter too which is good for allergies.

Miele good on absolutely everything. The cylinder are the best so you obviously have the issue of carrying upstairs but there's no loss of suction. I would never change!

Mine is a Miele bagged btw and it's awesome. Miele are worth it all the time! In the time I've had my Miele washing machine and dryer my best friends have been through (on average) 4 machines each. Theirs were things like LG/Bosch. Miele just last and last. Their warranties are excellent. I'd always buy through John Lewis (if possible) as they usually have a 2 year extended warranty on electrical but often the Miele warranty eclipses that as they are often 5 or 10 year ones. They're sturdy as hell and economical to fix if needed.

I swear I don't work for them. They're just ace and SO worth the extra!

Dyson V11 absolute. Its fabulous

TwunchOfBats · 01/04/2021 12:20

I had a Miele Cat & Dog for a few years then sold it on eBay as I wanted to change to a cordless. Damn near got the original price for it. So it's petty low risk if you don't like it.

Have a Dyson V10 now and it's good - but filters etc do take some care, the battery on full power never quite does the whole house and I suspect the battery will fail sooner or later (as happened with the v8). It's fine but I'd probably look for something else next time.

Not least because James Dyson is a cock-end who has had enough of my money Grin

Ok, am pretty convinced on the Miele as my main vacuum - am considering storing it upstairs where it's carpeted and would need the most use and just keeping a stick vacuum downstairs for everyday cleaning.

Still not sure what one though. All hard floors downstairs (though stairs themselves are carpeted).

Really appreciate all these views, it's so helpful to get information from people who have experience of each of these machines!

If it's all hard wood downstairs, what about a robot vaccum?

They excel on hard srfaces because they don't need much suction, just their sweeping action. They do need a pretty clear floor, though, to get the best out of them. (So, not one with lots of clutter or cables trailing etc)

I've ruled out a robovac as I use the vacuum for lots of jobs including dusting and cleaning the car. It's also too expensive and with young kids there is always stuff left lying about that would confuse the vacuum and probably short-circuit the poor thing!

@Idliketoteachtheworldtosing1

I love my dyson I've always had them and cannot recommend them enough. I know some people say that their performance isn't as good but I disagree.
If you’ve always had Dyson, how can you compare?

I bought a Miele cat and dog vacuum today... Grin

First impressions are really good - FANTASTIC suction, which is really great, though I've realised I'm probably going to lose a lot of socks unless I'm really careful about clearing up before vacuuming! My carpet looks so much fresher - I'm a bit embarrassed about how much stuff is in the vacuum bag already after only one use, although in my defence my old vacuum had lost all suction for quite some time.

It is much quieter than my old vacuum and I really like how all the tools are carried on board so are to hand when you need them.

It was very simple to slot everything together to use and very easy to switch between tools during use. It trundled about happily behind me and didn't get caught on the door saddles.

Only dislike so far is the hose is shorter than my previous one. With my last vacuum I was able to do the whole stairs with it sitting at the bottom, but this one needs to be carried up to reach them all. However it wasn't any big hassle and I don't think I'll notice after a few times once I'm used to it.

Great recommendation folks, thanks so much 👍👍 Will update after I've used it for a while with any further feedback to help anyone else considering getting one.

@Tiredandbored Yayyyy! They really are bloody wonderful things! Mine is about 14 years old and still going strong with no real loss of suction. We've had it serviced once and that's it! They are fabulous!

You're right about socks. Be careful! That thing is incredibly powerful!!!!

Tiredandbored · 09/04/2021 19:58

I am still very pleased with the Miele, have had it a week now and am really impressed with its performance.

The only slight annoyance is the shorter hose - when I'm using the dusting brush I have to set the vacuum up on its end to allow me to reach up higher (although I could use the extension pipe if I wanted).

Initially I was going to give feedback that the dusting brush was too small - it is too small when dusting a flat surface - but then as I used it I realised it was actually better than my previous larger one as it could get into nooks such as behind my radiator pipes more easily. Ideally two dusting brushes of different sizes would be great, but if I had to choose one I'd opt for the smaller one, so no complaint from me.

And best of all, my DD is fascinated with the buttons to increase and decrease the power and keeps volunteering to use the vacuum without needing to be asked! Grin

So glad you still like it. I only ever use the dusting brush on the end of the extension stick thing so I've never had an issue with reach.

It's damn powerful, isn't it!!!
