Washable doormats - Turtle Mat / Hug Rug / Others?

I got a couple of Dunelm Marvel washable doormats about a year ago just before 1st lockdown.

They get washed fairly regularly due to the dogs and the backing has disintegrated a little bit (due to not reading the instructions properly and washing at too high a temperature).

I'm considering getting another set so I've always got one in use while the other is being washed as they can take a couple of days to dry in winter.

Just looking at Turtle Mats (don't seem to come in the size I want) and Hug Rugs but both are more than double the price of the Dunelm ones - are they worth it?
The Dunelm ones are okay, the dogs paws aren't miraculous dry when they've walked over it, but they do take off the worst of it (they'd be fine if the dogs would stop and wipe their paws 🐕).

Any comparative experience or other brands for me to consider?

I’ve got several turtle mats. One is practically falling apart now but it’s been washed weekly for about 20 years. The one in the bathroom is a similar age and looks a bit tatty but I’m still using it. Others that are newer are still in pretty good shape.

Thanks Darker, it's more how good are they in use, absorbant etc.

I think the backing issue on the Dunelm ones is my fault, I washed them at 90°c one time with some other soiled dog stuff.

I bought 4 large turtle mats (rhs collection) at Hampton court flower show more than 15 years ago. Still gong string and have been washed a lot. They were not cheap and I viewed it as investing long term.

Two of these I used in the kitchen - in front of sink, in front of my range.

Thanks LongTimeMammaBear.
Any comments on how good the Turtle Mats / Hug Rugs are in use re absorbency, stopping muddy paws in their tracks etc?
I'm happy to pay more for something that will make a difference, but not its its just a name/brand thing.

I’ve no idea how they compare to others but mine have been pretty good.

I have hug rugs, I still need to dry the dogs paws with a towel every time she comes in.

Actually, looking again at the Turtle Mats thesizing really doesn't work. My doorway is 82cm wide and I really want to completely fill that space. 75cm would look odd. Current have 80cm x 95cm and that's more gap than I'd ideally like. The Hug Rug sizing works but the 2 I am looking at cost £90, compared to £40 for the Dunelm ones.

Thank you!!! I'd have happily paid the difference if they were miraculous, but didn't want to do so for no benefit.

I have had Hug rugs for years
Wash them every couple of weeks
They are still perfect

I bought a turtle mat for the back (kitchen) door about 8 years ago. It has heavy traffic, we use the door all day long all year round. It absorbs pretty well, but it does help if you pause on it rather than just stepping over. However it has not stood up well to repeated washing (approx fortnightly), the colours faded very quickly and the fibres have worn away where it has to be folded to put it in the machine, this happened quite quickly too. The central part of it looks a right mess now as the black interior fibres show through. I would like to replace it and will when we replace the kitchen later in the year but not sure if I will buy Turtle again.

That's useful on the Turtle Mats, if I could teach the dogs to wipe their feet none of it would be a problem 😊.

The Dunelm ones have held up really well, other than the deterioration from my 90°c wash - and it does say wash at 30°c so fair enough.

I'm adding as a rotating set rather than replacing.

Sounds to me as though there's not much advantage of either of those over the dunelm ones!

Get the kids training the dogs! I'm sure if there are 'treats involved, they'll all get the hang of it! 🤣

The turtle mat copes well with cat footprints, we have a fairly large patio so none of us are coming straight off grass and onto it, also we have a bristle brush outside for if we are properly muddy. I really notice the difference on the days I've taken it up for washing how dirty the floor gets if the patio is wet. So it does its job, just hasn't kept it's appearance.

Chasingsquirrels · 31/03/2021 08:55

Hahaha LatteLover.
The bloke I'm seeing has a Great Dane and he will wait and let DP wipe his paws, my cocker spaniel on the other hand is 100 miles an hour and resistant to most forms of training unless there is something in it for him or he wants to do it. Pleasing me isn't incentive enough and all of his food is used as training anyway. I might try "paw wiping" but REALLY don't see it succeeding - maybe I should start another thread in the doghouse....
Am going to order another set of the Dunlem ones and click & collect.

I used to have an old coir mat on the outside step, but 🐕 went through a phase of thinking it was the best place to urinate, so I got rid of it. Maybe another outdoor mat would help as well, although the mats themselves are okay - I also notice quite a difference on the days they are up for washing.
