Laundering 13 yo boys clothes

I have always washed clothes on a 4 hr eco wash at 30 in my Siemens 8kg machine with supermarket own brand non bio and a dash of washing soda - this has always cleaned well. The problem is it's no match for teen boy sweat - I can still smell armpit when the clothes come out! Do I need to up my temperature or detergent? I'd rather not use bio for environmental reasons.

I’d say up both. I do my teen sons at 40 with bio powder and no issues and that’s on a programme of just over an hour. Both sporty and whiffy but no problems post washing. If not keen to use bio (though not sure why ) spray armpits with white vinegar for a while before washing. Could also try one of in wash bacterial cleansers like dettol but I think they are a gimmick. But def up your temperature.

40° eco wash with bio here.

We do our bit for the environment, having my teen walking around stinking of stale sweat is not one I'm willing to do!

In what way is bio powder not environmentally friendly?
I use bio powder and sometimes add that laundry sanitiser to help with smells
I would also increase to 40⁰C

dementedpixie · 13/03/2021 16:16

You get sprays for smelly armpits on clothing too. Think there's a Dr Bekmann one

Cookerhood · 13/03/2021 16:20

Washing at 30 will also result in your machine getting smelly & possibly getting gunged up.
In crease the temp & use bio powder.

YellowDaffidols · 13/03/2021 16:21

I might try it on a different cycle.
A less eco friendly one, with more water and agitation might help.

frogsbreath · 13/03/2021 16:22

It needs biological powder. I always used non bio but I now have to use bio washing powder and 40c on my husbands work shirts. Well, it's the smelly armpits Sad

I do my 13 year old son's at 40 and they're fine (all clean clothes each day so one wear).

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 13/03/2021 16:24

A 4 hour cycle?! Madness. Do a 1hour cycle if you have one, at 40° then line dry.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 13/03/2021 16:25

Is he showering daily and using anti perspirant every day?

dementedpixie · 13/03/2021 16:28

I use this sometimes too
And halo sports wash is also good for stinky clothes

I was at 40c and use BioD washing powder (I used to use ecover but it left clothes a bit unfresh). My wiffy 14 year olds t-shirts smell fine.
Two things I have found - 30c is a false economy unless a fabric is delicate - it never gets clothes clean enough.
Also laundry liquids as opposed to powders sometimes cause a build up and a slightly pongy result (not sweat as such just a bit stale)

BlankTimes · 13/03/2021 18:03

I use white vinegar on the smelly armpit area of clothing, leave it for a good 10 to 15 mins, then wash at 30 degrees with whatever detergent is to hand, usually the eco egg.

Thanks for all replies!
I thought that bio detergent enzymes continue to be active even when they reach the waste system (I admit that does sound a bit far fetched!) Will try bio. I wash towels and sheets at 60 so the machine does get a hot run regularly. Thanks for the tips on products. He showers daily but doesn't reliably use deo - he's only needed to in the last couple of months - we're working on this.
