Odd question - cutlery storage?

Very odd question (and probably pointless) I know, but whereabouts and how do you store your cutlery?

At the moment, we store our cutlery in the 'top drawer' right under our hob, but this takes up so much space that could be used for kitchen utensils!

I had thought about putting a cutlery drawer in our dining room sideboard (which has drawers), but I'm not sure if that is practical.

I really don't want to store my cutlery on the countertop, as I wouldn't like it to get greasy or dusty.

How do you store your cutlery please?! Grin

We have 5 small drawers in the kitchen (between counters and cupboards)

  1. Cutlery
  2. Bin bags, tinfoil, sandwich bags etc
  3. Food prep utensils
  4. Cooking utensils
  5. Baking equipment.

I am so jealous of all your drawers.

We inherited this kitchen from the previous owners who clearly loved a cupboard, but a fear of drawers! We have 3 in a 'column' (one narrow drawer directly under the hob, and two deeper drawers which are useful for storing bakeware, colanders etc),

Thanks @Madcats - the JJ 'narrow' cutlery storage tool looks like a possibility, to free up some space for cooking utensils in the same drawer.

Ours is in our dining room sideboard however a keep a small collection in the kitchen in my utensils pot for whenever I need a fork or teaspoon when I'm cooking.

Drawer for larger things, all cutlery and wooden spoons, scissors etc in a metal container on the counter. But we don't have a lot of cutlery. I think about 5 of each spoons, knives and forks.

Yes, that's a good idea. I was also thinking about needing a random spoon or fork during cooking, and not wanting to pootle all the way across to the dining room for this.

Why did I not think of this earlier?! I am embarrassed Blush

I do keep some cutlery in my sideboard. It's very easy to just take it out to put it on the table. We do eat in the dining room regularly.

@TheBlackTower you are probably the first person ever to be jealous of an Army kitchen! I think the number of drawers might be the only positive. Grin

main cutlery in a drawer next to the sink main utensils i use daily in a pot on the window sill, odds and sods utensils i dont use all the time in drawer under the sink unit

I have a drawer with an insert for cutlery. I have a jar for cooking utensils. There's a very small cutlery storage container by Joseph and Joseph if you have limited space.

Symbion · 09/03/2021 19:50

We once inherited a kitchen with no drawers at all. It was basically a really cheap refurb - drawers are more expensive than cupboards. It was a complete pain and it concentrated my mind that the no 1 use of a drawer is for cutlery.

In our next kitchen we had a 3 drawer stack as you describe. I had cutlery and sharp knives in the top drawers, and a lot of the utensils were stored vertically, in jugs, inside the deepest drawer. My baking trays and the colanders were "big stuff" that lived in a corner cupboard.

Okbussitout · 09/03/2021 19:55

In a pot on the counter. It doesn't get dirty and greasy from being out because it gets used constantly so none of it is sitting there for weeks.

I much prefer it to a cutlery tray and have used a pot for over 10 years. I just think the trays get manky and need cleaning all the time. Obviously the pot does need cleaning but the bit you put in your mouth isn't sitting in those bits that seem to always fall in.

I alis need cutlery for testing food or serving up so I think it a room not the kitchen it would be annoying.

Symbion · 09/03/2021 20:53

Also you can save a bit of space by just having a basic cutlery tray. Ours is a simple wooden one, just over 20cm wide.

TheBlackTower · 10/03/2021 06:48

Thanks all. The compact Joseph Joseph in-drawer unit suggested looks like a good solution for our dining room sideboard (with a couple of spares in the utensil jar).

I have three of the Joseph Joseph slimline cutlery trays in my top drawer.

Life changing!

Seriously, never thought I could be enthusiastic about a cutlery tray but I love them! I’ve never been able to fit my (far too big) collection of cutlery in one drawer before.

I cannot recommend them enough!

Hovverry · 10/03/2021 20:16

The drawer I want to keep cutlery in is very deep and to keep just cutlery in the bottom would waste loads of space. I keep table knives, forks and spoons upright in plastic containers and cooking utensils in the rest of the drawer.
