Mould on silicone sealant

Anyone managed to get this off without using a gallon of bleach?

You can buy mould spray but you would be better off peeling it off and resealing

HotPenguin · 07/03/2021 21:08

No. The only options really are stopping building up in the first place by keeping the bathroom well ventilated, or remove the sealant and replace with new.

FangsForTheMemory · 07/03/2021 21:12

If I were to replace it I would have to pay someone else to do it, which is why I'm asking about cleaning it.

Dettol mould and mildew spray, works every time

KingstonTownThePlaceILongToBe · 07/03/2021 21:15

I've had this recently and used cillit bang mould spray. It got it off and I would recommend it.

winniesanderson · 07/03/2021 21:16

Cif do a spray which I've found absolutely brilliant on sealant around sinks and windows. And on tile grout too. We live in a rental property which I think has had some epic mildew issues and living in a damp area it's a typical problem around here. And it's pretty much eradicated it. It's been an Aldi special buy in the last few weeks and still available at my local one.

@whenindoubtbake @KingstonTownThePlaceILongToBe How bad was your mould please? What I have is very bad indeed : (

I recently bought something called mould magic and it was amazing! I had tried a couple of spray type things previously tjar didn't really work but this stuff was really good! I'm not sure if they sell it un shops, I think I bought it online somewhere.

Chwaraeteg · 07/03/2021 21:27

Oh, I think mould magic has bleach in it though, it smells bleachy.

wellthatsunusual · 07/03/2021 21:29

Replacing the sealant is really straightforward. I am not a diy-er by any stretch of the imagination but I've done it several times and it has been really easy.

FangsForTheMemory · 07/03/2021 23:35

Bully for you. I’ve tried replacing it before and failed. Additionally this sealant is in a tight space behind the taps. So if you don’t mind I’ll stick with the very helpful suggestions that other people have made.

I don't care what you do. Why would I? Confused

You hadn't mentioned that you had tried it before, how could I have known? I was only offering an alternative suggestion.

How do you get through life being so needlessly angry at such tiny things?

FangsForTheMemory · 08/03/2021 08:45

You didn’t attempt to answer my question, you blew your own trumpet. You’ve gone on to put your own spin on how I live my life without knowing anything about me, which is entirely in line with your first response. Not everything is about you.

@ChwaraetegI don’t mind a bit of bleach, it’s just that there’s a chap on YouTube suggesting you soak cotton wool in bleach and squash it on the sealant, which I’m not keen on because my cat sticks his nose in everything.

LIZS · 08/03/2021 08:54

Most treatments contain bleach or similar. HG mould spray is good. Can you keep the cat out of the room for an hour or so, or overnight? You might want to protect the taps though in case it discolours them.

OP, are you ok? How much mould-removal spray have you accidentally inhaled?!

Blew my own trumpet GrinGrin

FFS it's a bit of sealant, I wasn't claiming to have carried out brain surgery. Hmm

The only thing I know about you is that you seem very angry.

GCAcademic · 08/03/2021 09:01

God, what an unbelievably rude reaction to someone giving you a bit of advice.

I won't bother with what I was going to suggest.

AllTheCakes · 08/03/2021 09:06

Oh dear. No need to be so rude!

WonkyCactus · 08/03/2021 09:13

Came for the mould removal tips, stayed for the drama! Grin

Chunkymenrock · 08/03/2021 09:15

I liked the reply about replacing sealant. I've never dared to replace it in my life, but that helpful response made me think, ooh I could perhaps have a go as it sounds easy then! I think the phrase leaping down someone's throat is completely apt here. Confused

Oh good. I'm glad someone took it in the spirit it was intended!

It's just about the only DIY job I have ever successfully managed. I am quite uncoordinated and clumsy in general, but it really is quite straightforward.

Just don't tell anyone if you do it though, because you'd only be blowing your own trumpet Wink

WonkyCactus · 08/03/2021 09:23

@wellthatsunusual
I appreciated the advice too! Can you just cut out and replace the bit with the mould on it, do you think? Is it easy to blend it back in with the rest of the sealant? I've only got a small mouldy bit under my shower so I don't want to have to replace the whole lot if I can help it.

Chunkymenrock · 08/03/2021 09:28

I wondered do you have to squidge it along with your finger too?
