Can't use cleaning sprays, what else can I use?

I have had a cough for a year and have decided to stop using cleaning sprays for the last 5 days. My cough is SO much better.
I have used dettol wipes to clean the surfaces but it's not really sustainable.
Does anyone have any idea of something else I can use for bathrooms, kitchen etc.

Dish soap and water.

ATowelAndAPotato · 06/03/2021 13:16

Yes, washing up liquid is pretty good for most purposes.
White/distilled vinegar/soda crystals also may be a good alternative?

Catawaul · 06/03/2021 13:16

Cream cleaner.

randomsabreuse · 06/03/2021 13:17

Can you cope with Method? I cough with Sainsbury's and Tesco's own plus Dettol brand but all the Method ones are fine.

orangenasturtium · 06/03/2021 13:26

White vinegar and bicarbonate of soda might help. Washing up liquid and cream cleaners will be better than sprays.

Microfibre cloths aren't great for the environment but if you have no choice... They are great for cleaning with just water.

It sounds like you are fine with the Dettol wipes? I would guess it is the aerosol from the spray that is causing the issues when you breath it in. You could still use the sprays by pouring the liquid onto a cloth to apply it rather than spraying.

I never use sprays. Fairy liquid diluted cleans anything. Vinegar and water likewise. That's all you need really.

The best cleaning cloths I have (I’m a cleaner) are old towels cut up into cloth size pieces.

UhtredRagnarson · 06/03/2021 13:29

Also agree with WUL, (starships is good too) vinegar, bicarbonate and soda crystals.

Bucket of hot soapy water (washing up liquid will do or household soap) and some old cloths. As pp old towels are excellent cut into smaller portions. I still use old terry nappy cloths from 50 years ago!

I find cream cleaner is good on bathrooms and I just use fairy liquid in the kitchen as I don’t like too many chemicals. I’ve also got an electronic super scrubber recommended by Mrs hinch which I find reduces the need to use any chemicals

To clean the glass door on my oven I use Pink Stuff, it's a pink paste and is just £1.00

Watching as I have the same issue. In my case I think it's the linalool fragrance - and actually it was using Method that set me off.

For those of you that use soapy water or diluted washing up liquid - do you rinse after? TIA

TalktotheFoot · 06/03/2021 14:25

Hot soapy water. White vinegar. Elbow grease.

@MythicalBiologicalFennel I only rinse if there's a bubbly residue. I use a clean cloth wrung out in clean water and wipe down.

ijokeijoke · 06/03/2021 14:33

Amazing ! Thanks so much this has been really helpful !

@MythicalBiologicalFennel

Wipe down with a clean cloth/rag afterwards.

lojojomo · 06/03/2021 15:15

You don't need cleaning sprays but IME you do need, if not using them, decent microfibre cloths that you wash in the machine. They will get any domestic surface as clean as if you used sprays, and definitely more so than using wipes as the dwell time of the liquid used on wipes is always longer than the evaporation time so actually the only "cleaning" part of those things is the mechanical removal coming from the cloth surface.
