Do you wash your hands after hoovering?

Happytodayhappytomorrow · 28/02/2021 16:39

We have a difference of opinion here and I'd like some perspective please.

Big hoover is kept in the cupboard under the stairs.

Little rechargeable hoover, for a quick blast around the kitchen floor, is kept on the wall in the utility room.

Should we wash our hands are hoovering with either, neither or both?

TIA

I always do but I don’t really know why really.

Mamamamasaurus · 28/02/2021 17:10

Why would you, unless you've scooped the crap up with your bare hands and then hoovered it?

People wash their hands after touching their own dishwasher? 🤔

LindaEllen · 28/02/2021 17:10

I wouldn't, but there's no harm in washing your hands afterwards if you want to!

TMIspecimenneeded · 28/02/2021 17:12

I often wash my hands after hoovering because it will usually make my hands feel sticky/sweaty (large floor area)
I don't every time though, just in those circs. If I've got my small dyson out for a quick spot clean I wouldn't as my hands wouldn't get sweaty.

FunnyWonder · 28/02/2021 17:18

Like a few other posters, yes I do, but no idea why. I wouldn't notice if someone else didn't, though.

PickAChew · 28/02/2021 17:19

Why wouldn't you?

PrairieFires · 28/02/2021 17:20

I'm pretty slack in the hand washing department and I've definitely got a robust immune system as have my children. Could be luck or could be helping.

It's not deliberate, I just forget (not after going to the loo but generally).

SundayTeatime · 28/02/2021 17:20

Neither.

MysweetAudrina · 28/02/2021 17:23

Never even crossed my mind that I might need to. All I'm doing is holding the stick bit and not sure why that is any dirtier than anything else I might touch.

PickAChew · 28/02/2021 17:24

And yes, I wash my hands after putting the washer on. I've been touching dirty clothes, including underwear, I've been touching a cup that's covered in pretty caustic detergent (I went to the loo without washing my hands between handling the powder and wiping myself once - ouch) and there is inevitably a sticky patch on the machine where Ds2 has turned it off with food on his hands at some point.

PickAChew · 28/02/2021 17:27

And when I've been vacuuming, I've almost always changed heads at some point or pulled fluff or threads off brushes.

Happytodayhappytomorrow · 28/02/2021 18:00

Thank you all.

I’m trying to ascertain if I’m being slovenly for not washing my hands or if DS’s OCD is getting worse.

Stupid thread imo. Wash them if you wish.

MagdasMadHouse · 28/02/2021 19:05

I wash my hands after most things. After I do my hair, before and after I eat anything or handle any food, after every nappy change and toilet trip (even if it's not me using the loo). I also wash my hands before and after washing my face.
I wash my hands on entering the house from outside, after loading the washing machine or dishwasher, before I put my washing up gloves on (so I don't put any bacteria/germs etc into them) and on taking them off (so if there is anything inside then I don't transfer it, even though I change my washing up gloves to a new pair once a week).
I wash my hands after cleaning anything, or handling any chemicals or substances which could be irritating, unhygienic, etc. Mostly I try to wear gloves, though (again wash before and after, though).

When covid struck the only thing that changed was now when I'm out instead of waiting until I can wash my hands with soap and water, I also use wipes and hand gel. When I hear people say they wash their hands so much more now I can't relate to that. I don't have OCD and I am not obsessively clean in other ways, I just hate my hands having anything on them. They are wonderful tools, the best tools for most jobs. But they are not good tools when they aren't clean

BobbitWormNightmares · 28/02/2021 19:12

I wash my hands after all housework - I just associate a hoover as being dirty, and if I load washing machine I want to wash any powder off my hands. Etc

I don't wash my hands before I eat though. Which I know you should. But I don't really think to, because I'm always washing my hands after doing any tasks.

Wash hands before I cook though I should add!

If this is real then you have a problem. Washing before putting gloves on and again after taking them off? Yeah that's not normal.
oohmama · 03/03/2021 10:19

I do
But I have quite sever OCD
I also wash my hands after doing anything remotely 'dirty' in terms of housework
Washing machine, dishwasher, hoovering, even just tidying around I have to wash my hands after...
But like I said I have OCD not just 'abit ocd'
My partner doesn't wash his hands after vacuuming but he doesn't have OCD...

I wish I didn't! It's draining

stealthninjamum · 03/03/2021 10:26

I wash my hands after most cleaning jobs although not if I’m going from hoovering to cleaning the floor for example. Then I’ll do the next task and Wash my hands after the second.

My reasoning with hoovering is that when you have mice (pests rather than pets) you’re told not to hoover their droppings because the dust that swirls out of the hoover is harmful to breathe in so clearly it’s a dirtier job than you expect. Im not particularly clean and I definitely don’t have ocd but I’m wondering if we shouldn’t all wear face masks when we hoover?

lazylinguist · 03/03/2021 10:30

No. I wash my hands after going to the toilet; before and after preparing food or eating; after doing any job that actually gets my hands dirty. And since the pandemic I wash them when I come home after going out. That's it. I don't wash my hands after touching or using household appliances.

MagdasMadHouse · 03/03/2021 10:45

It sounds excessive, but for example if I'm doing laundry and washing dishes, I will sort the laundry and put it in the machine, then wash my hands, get the chemicals, wash the chemicals off my hands, put my gloves on, do the dishes, take my gloves off, wash my hands. If I'm eating and then do dishes, I would wash my hands to get any food residue off my hands, then wash my hands, then put my gloves on to do the dishes. It's the pattern I have always had to follow in work environments too, even stricter now with Covid. So it's just habit. Other people do comment on it sometimes, but I don't even realise I'm doing it.

KirstenBlest · 04/03/2021 14:15

Yes of course. I wash my hands a lot.
