Cleaning an enamel pan

When my mum went into care one of the things I took from her house was her old black enamel roasting pan. Mum used this for many years to roast meat and vegetables. When I got hold of it is was pristine. I've used it for two years now and it looks like my other pans - it has caked on gunk and is sticky. What am I doing wrong and how can I clean it?

I;

  • don't use it to cook meat
  • use either oil or ghee for roasting veges
  • clean it in very hot water
  • don't use a dishwasher
  • have tried soaking, heating salted water, Bar Keepers friend, and scrubbing.

Nothing works.

I'm wary of doing more in case I scratch the surface (I destroyed another one this way, although not as good quality as this one).

Any pearls of wisdom?

Astonish oven and cookwear cleaning paste works for my burnt on grease, other marks.

Thank you! I will look that up!

If you've got vanish laundry powder, soak it in that. Use a full scoop and hot water.

Looks like this. I get it in home bargains or other discount chemists

I can try that one straight away because I do have this! Thank you!

I use the liquid to clean the bathroom and it does make it sparkle.

And use a sponge scourer. I like this one

Another great tip - thank you!

I was worried about scratching.

Another vote for Astonish. Also soft metal or copper scourer (not Brillo).

For Once you have it clean.....someone told me to where possible only use kitchen roll to wipe over ovens pans, don’t leave it to cool down do it when still warm

Yes - I did wonder if this was a mistake I was making. Mum always did this and then washed up straight after dinner. I don't always.
