New boiler installation costs.

We have not had any hot water for a few weeks now and as the repair cost is £700 and the boiler is on it's last legs (15+ years old) we are looking to change it. We've had quotes from £2100 all the way up to £3900 Shock.

We've had 4 engineer companies round, who we have had to chase for quotes time and time again. What a nightmare.

Anyway, to get to the main point. All the companies use different boilers and they all say their's are the best and the others are "alright". Has any one had these boilers fitted and how happy are you with them?

We got a new Vaillant installed last summer and it cost about £3k including installation and a Nest thermostat. Happy with it so far and the one it replaced was a Vaillant that had lasted nearly 30 years Shock. We’re in London.

of the brands you mention, Worcester and Vaillant do well in "Which" surveys, as does Viessmann (which was marked down for parts not being widely held). Since mine has needed none in 16 years, that does not concern me. I would be more concerned by a brand that was so unreliable its parts were sold in every high street.

Have a look at the manufacturers websites and see if they have an "approved installer" scheme. You will often get an extended warranty if you use one.

Occasionally there are "special offers" when business is slack, but this will not apply in the middle of a cold winter.

A local independent near your home, who's been in business for years, can be a convenient choice. Check that you are not using a flybynight company. Companieshouse will tell you. Look on the Gas Safe register to see who the qualified people are, so you will be able to tell if they're the ones who do the work. Local independents sometimes have a father and son team.

See if any of your neighbours or local friends have recently had an installation and annual servicing.

You mention you have no hot water, so I deduce that you have no HW cylinder. This is an unfortunate result of combis.

As your system is fairly old, it will probably need a powerflush and a magnetic system filter included in the quote, and most likely, new TRVs. You may as well have the lockshields done at the same time, and any radiators that are too small to keep the room warm, or show any signs of rust.

This will not lead you to the cheapest bid.

we had a new combi boiler fitted just before Christmas. Based on our research we were anticipating prices similar to what you have been quoted.

We were quoted £1650 supply and fit for a 'cheaper' boiler with 5 year warranty.

We went for a vaillant, which cost £2300. That including them flushing the system and fitting a magnetic filter. It has a 10 year warranty provided the boiler is serviced annually. We thought the price was fair. Our boiler is in the attic, so working conditions were cosy and they had to go out on to the roof (3 storeys up Shock ) to replace the flue

We've just had a Worcester greenstar 30i put in (so a bit larger) which was just under £2700, including the filter and system flush. 10 year warranty. We're in London and I got a few quotes which were in the same ballpark. It's a long established local independent.

It replaced a 15yo boiler which was on the way out. House is much more toasty and the bath gets properly hot 🔥

Thank you everyone. @PigletJohn I read the manufacture websites and reviews inc on heating engineer forums.

I did get British Gas to come round and quote. An eye watering £4300ish. What are they on?

In the end I went for an ATAG boiler which are supposed to be the most energy efficient boilers in Europe. All reviews said they were good but a bit pricey. I went with a long established independent, with excellent reviews. Anyway they did a fantastic job (and were on the roof on a very windy wet day) and I ended up paying £3200 with a power flush, which they will do next week.

It was a race to have the first hot bath 🛀 in weeks.
