£40 !!
I am pretty damn sure that when the previous owner had them done it was £12...
what a nightmare

so- where are you - how many windows/type of house and how much!

OP posts:
maggotandjerry · 02/11/2007 13:15

Can top that - £50 and I only have six windows! But I am in central London and on the fourth floor so they have to hang out the window on one side of the flat to do it (other side has a fire escape so is easy).

But have had it done once in 10 years for that reason!

ja9 · 02/11/2007 13:22

ours is £14. just get it done once a month.

last house was £3.50!!! we have a large conservtory now tho', so that's probably why... also probably something to do with te fact that i'm on a nice street now and window cleaners aren't daft .

i remember my granny paying her window cleaner 60p!! does that mean i'm getting old

Piggy · 02/11/2007 13:24

£40 for the outside but v big house and lots of windows.

Caroline1852 · 02/11/2007 13:40

Quidproquo - No I haven't name changed. Why do you ask?

Also, why is a conservatory OK but an orangery something which is ooooh. An orangery is simply something that is integral to the house and a conservatory is something that is an addition to the house design.

Hallgerda · 02/11/2007 13:44

Gosh, I'd assumed the difference was to do with the presence or absence of oranges!

BettySpaghetti · 02/11/2007 14:02

The only orangery I've been in was at Blenheim Palace (went to a wedding reception there) - I'm pretty sure their window cleaning bill was more than £40

Joking aside I always wondered what made an orangery an orangery IYSWIM

NDP, they are bringing in laws re the use of ladders.

Just remember though that, by law, window cleaners need to be insured and in most areas hold a licence. If a window cleaner works in various council areas (which most do) they need a licence for each area and this isn't cheap. The licence means they are police checked and you have the security of knowing you are not opening the door to an axe murderer lol. So if you want a genuine, law abiding and police checked window cleaner you have to expect to pay more than £2.50... Everyone should ask their window cleaner to produce a licence as if they don't have one they are breaking the law. If they cause damage and are uninsured you have nothing to claim on.

Also, the unlicensed window cleaners, who can afford to charge a pittance as usually they are subsidising dole money, are doing legalised out of work because they just can't compete.

Still that being said, £40 is a bit steep...

NomDePlumeOfBonfireSmoke · 02/11/2007 14:05

thanks for the clarification, gibberish

tassisssss · 02/11/2007 14:17

i think we pay £7

gibberish · 02/11/2007 14:25

You're welcome NDP. I'm a mine of useless information me!

foofi · 02/11/2007 14:33

We have paid £25 for about five years, but the window cleaner we had before that charged £30.

jenkel · 02/11/2007 14:47

£8 for 10 windows this include one huge patio door, that is floor to ceiling glass and 4 panes of glass, almost a wall of glass.

A further £8 if we want the conservatory done which we dont get done every time.

iota · 02/11/2007 14:51

£12 for 4 bed house plus conservatory.

The cleaners use the pure water fed pole system.

stealthsquiggle · 02/11/2007 14:51

OP was definitely "had" - we pay £25 for fully registered, insured, etc for large house with lots of awkwardly placed windows - and he is happy to come every other month which keeps the cost bearable and the windows see-throughable.

GreenGlassGoblin · 02/11/2007 14:52

we have one of the local blokes with fag in mouth- charges £5 to do our 4-bed semi. Can't believe some of the prices here (we're oop north too)

nannyL · 02/11/2007 19:57

3 bed house £7

pensioner next door pays pensioners rate of £5 though (and for a while so did I as my neighbour always payed for him and the lady in this house, and he didnt tell the window cleaner she had moved so i got a few months at pensioner rate)

PeckaRolloverAgain · 02/11/2007 20:10

How can I get a window cleaner? Im desperate for one but have been kerb crawling for ages and havent found one!!

snowleopard · 02/11/2007 20:16

Think you've been 'ad Roy, but at least it makes me feel better about being ripped off by the bastard cowboy hedge trimmer earlier this year!

Our windows are £5 once a month (3-bed flat, about 20 panes in all) and the cleaners are lovely - they always tell DS to work hard at school so he doesn't end up as a window cleaner! I gave them £10 at xmas and they seemed genuinely happy and said they would have a nice pint! Now why can't all the workmen I have round be like that...

Alishanty · 03/11/2007 16:33

We have a really nice old guy that lives up the road. He only does the two front windows and the door but it's £2. Usually comes round every week and if you haven't got the money he lets you pay next time.

JARM · 03/11/2007 16:35

my neighbour had hers done today so I grabbed him and asked what he charges... £8 for front and back, and has his own company with a water tank in his van that he runs the hose from - all very cool and hi-tech.

He is coming on monday - guess I should clean the insides of the windows now!!!

colditz · 03/11/2007 16:41
