Poly cotton or cotton bedding?

Thingywhatsit · 11/02/2021 20:50

I am in desperate need for new bedding - mine are absolutely ancient! (Possibly 10 years plus!)

I need to tumble dry them and I won’t be ironing them. Am I best to chose poly cotton or cotton? I’ve only had cotton before so not sure what the downsides of poly cotton are.

Poly cotton has polyester in. 100% cotton stay nice and cool in the summer, poly cotton can be sweaty and it does bobble as well.

Poly cotton will rumble dry more quickly but make you sweat more. Personally I can’t abide anything other than cotton.

I always do 100% cotton. Quality varies so much though. It's not all about thread count and I've never learned!

FlyingSuitcase · 12/02/2021 01:07

Poly cotton won't breathe as well but might show less creasing. I prefer cotton but have bought the odd polycotton duvet cover if the design is right.

Sliding into cotton sheets with a decent thread count is one of lifes great pleasures!*. Polycotton's a scratchier experience and it bobbles.

*When I get into bed I like rubbing my arms on the cold pillows please tell me I'm not the only person to do this

100% cotton. Or at least 50% cotton. Any more of the poly shit and the cover does not stay intact with the quilt. That is so much more annoying than drying.

Brushed cotton! So cosy. I never iron it.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 12/02/2021 01:48

Another vote for brushed cotton. Lovely getting into bed in winter without having that initial chill of cold bedding.

Thingywhatsit · 12/02/2021 13:23

Ooooh brushed cotton - that’s an idea! I did toy with getting one of those fleece duvet sets, but I am thinking that’s potential for a sweaty static kind of sleep!

Thanks for the input - gonna stay away from the poly cotton ones.....

"poly cotton can be sweaty "

I'll never understand the hatred for polyester. I mean, maybe it has a worse environmental impact than cotton, of that I'm not sure, but cotton is possibly one of the worst fabrics ever when it's hot or when you sweat, because it doesn't wick away moisture - cotton stays wet and damp. Fabrics like polyster, merino, bamboo do a great job at wicking away your sweat.

Name me one athlete who uses a cotton t-shirt instead of a polyester one!

Hikers and mountaineers also have a saying, "cotton kills" to refer to the fact that cotton garments remain wet and, in extreme circumstances, can cause hypothermia. You won't get hypothermia if you're not climbing the Everest, but you'll get wet cotton fabric...

Meant to add, also, there is polyester and polyester, not all synthetic fabrics are the same.

I had a revelation about a year ago and bought cotton jersey fitted sheets. Fit perfectly and don't need ironing. Good for hot and cold weather. With non-iron cotton duvet covers as well life is now very simple.

SueblueNZ · 12/02/2021 20:41

I prefer cotton or bamboo but have used a cotton/poly mix which were fine. But I cannot abide microfiber bedding. The feel of it makes my skin crawl.

Icenii · 12/02/2021 20:46

Tell me about thread count not meaning quality. I'm eyeing up my new 600 thread count sheets I've just unwrapped and and washed.
