Central heating

Do people leave their heating on overnight or turn it off?
I'm tempted to leave it on during this cold spell but worried about the bill at the same time

Ours is on a timer, comes on about 5.30am so it’s warm when we wake up

Eruss · 08/02/2021 20:31

If you are going to leave it on can you do so but on a lower temp?

Applejack87 · 08/02/2021 21:36

Ours is on a timer too, I pop hot water bottles in the beds at night

SassenachWitch · 08/02/2021 21:38

Ours is on from 5:30am to 9.30pm, hot water bottles in bed from 9pm.

I get up at 6.15am. I hate getting out of bed if it’s cold in the house, it also warms my towel nicely on the rad.

dementedpixie · 10/02/2021 19:35

Ours goes off at 10pm and back on at 6am

user1732578431456 · 10/02/2021 19:38

It can actually work out cheaper to leave it on at a lower temperature than to have to do short bursts at high temperature because the house has become so cold in between.

dementedpixie · 10/02/2021 19:40

That's supposed to be a myth

midgedude · 10/02/2021 19:41

Ours is on all the time with temperature low overnight and our bills aren't high

ParkheadParadise · 10/02/2021 19:46

Ours has been on 24hrs for the last couple of days.
This morning it was -6 outside when I got up. I've got a T-shirt and leggings on.
It's -3 outside just now.
Our bill is dd, so what we pay in summer we use in winter.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 10/02/2021 19:58

dh has a flap at this time of year when the temps are regularly below zero and whacks the heating on 24h hours. I have turned the radiator in our room down to zero in protest.

But it is nice to get up and have a lovely waft of warm as you walk out to the landing, normally the house is warm enough on timer, but it's extra toasty with it on 24hours.

I do keep standing on the doorstep to "get some air" even though it's probably been well under zero for a whole week!

Shelby30 · 10/02/2021 20:00

We have it set to 20 degrees and it clicks off when it gets to 20.5. That's from 6am to 10pm. After that it's set to come on if it drops below 17 degrees any other time and go off at 18 degrees. I was sick of getting up and it was like 14 degrees 😮 and it wld take hours before it stopped feeling Baltic. It's much better the way we have it now although sometimes I feel too hot but don't bother putting it off. We've done this since last winter (obvs turn it off in summer) but I haven't noticed a huge increase in our bills.

felulageller · 10/02/2021 20:01

We put ours to 15c overnight.

gretagreengrapes · 10/02/2021 20:13

We always just put it down to 16 degrees overnight, it did click on a few nights ago but rarely does.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 10/02/2021 22:46

Ours is off overnight and on for an hour in the morning. We have Hive so I turn it on when I leave work so it's nice and toasty when I get home!

BackforGood · 10/02/2021 22:51

Ours clicks on if the inside temp drops below 12 degrees.
It is programmed to come on to 19 degrees 30mins before we get up, for 90mins.

dewisant2020 · 10/02/2021 23:10

I have left it on 24 hours for the last few days, it's absolutely freezing outside and I'm no spring chicken.
I always resent paying so much money for energy but needs must, I must ask my daughter to try and help me find a better deal with another supplier. Keep safe everyone
