Hi all,

I have a flea infestation for the first time and of course it has happened when I have a 4 week old baby Sad

We saw a flea crawling on his face and he has a little bit on his leg, I’m so upset and stressed.

We’ve treated the pets and been hoovering nonstop. I have ordered some Indorex which has arrived today, I just wanted to check -

The website says safe for babies to be around after but I’m a massive worried and still cautious to use chemicals in a house with such a small baby, have people here with babies used it?

Also we plan on doing a room at a time, will it be ok for us to spray a room upstairs while baby is downstairs or would we need to leave the house with the baby?

Any help is much appreciated - Im worried sick about this situation Sad thank you!

What are you using on your pets as not all are effective?

ofwarren · 06/02/2021 12:31

Just do a room at a time and let it air out for 24 hours.
Also check what flea product you are using on your pet as most you can buy from the pet shop don't work as fleas have become immune. You may need your vet to prescribe a stronger one.

FixTheBone · 06/02/2021 12:49

We had an outbreak and used indorex which succeeded after the 'sustainable' technique of excessive hoovering failed.

7 kids at home, youngest was 6 months, I just did the whole house (3 floors) by starting in one downstairs room, doing the rest of the house, moving the baby into the first room and then doing the last room.

I also went overkill on the hoovering - the heat and vibration is supposed to hatch any eggs whilst the indorex is still active and did the entire house twice a day for 3 days, moving all the furniture, beds, everything.

I’m using beaphar fiprotec which isn’t from vets but pet store said it’s the best they do. Website says veterinary strength, will this not be enough? Regardless I’ve just treated them recently so they will have to wait another month for better stuff Sad

I’ve just found 3 fleas on cat today when combing, does this mean flea treatment definitely ineffective?

Regarding the Indorex I’m not planning on leaving house with baby for a few hours while partner does the whole house but still abit worried about coming home and baby somehow being affected.

Also how long do you leave it before hoovering?

Thank you!

No that's not a good flea treatment as fleas are often resistant to fipronil. The best OTC one would probably be Advantage which I think you can get from pets at home. I dont know how soon you can treat again - maybe ask your vet. I get my flea and wormer treatment from the vet- mine get stronghold plus (fleas and some worms) and profender (for the worms not covered by stronghold plus)

LucieLoo21 · 07/02/2021 17:03

Thanks @dementedpixie I will speak to the vets.

Do you think it’s pointless spraying Indorex all over the house before I retreat the pets with better stuff or should I go ahead and do it anyway and treat the pets afterwards when I can?

A tip I was given a number of years ago was to put a flea collar in your Hoover bag or cylinder also try using the household flea treatment at dusk as it is more effective in lower uv light levels, and treat the whole house.

SnowmanDrinkingSnowballs · 09/02/2021 12:41

For the future you might want to consider the injections the vet can give. We used to have a female cat who was always bringing mice in so continually catching fleas from them. If I remember correctly the cat had an injection every 6 months which meant once fleas bit her they would die. Once they get into your house and soft furnishings they are very difficult to get rid of and I totally understand you not wanting your baby around those chemicals.

StepOutOfLine · 09/02/2021 12:44

You need to treat the house now you've got an infestation.
And big time.
When we used Indorex, it was brilliant, but it took a good couple of weeks. They're like lice, you're not going to get every single one first time.
Any soft furnishings need hot washing and treating, under sofas, the underside of furniture.
Mine was a couple of years ago now, but I thought it was never going to end. Next door's cat who used to pop in while she was at work was to blame, and she'd been treated regularly.
You need your windows open, Indorex is horrific. But it will do the job eventually.

Stupidusernamefaff · 09/02/2021 12:49

Been there- it was hell. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I honestly think just ring your council now and book professional pest control through them- should be cheaper than going private. Ours cost £85 ish. I wouldn’t mess around. We waited a week or so thinking we could sort it - learn from our mistakes! It’s making me itch just thinking about it! Also you need to ring your vet and get the tablet flea killer prescribed this is MUCH better than any back of the neck one. The pest controllers said to let the pets roam around the house once they’re treated like this as they will basically be a flea killing machine.

Whistle73 · 09/02/2021 12:50

We'd been using Advantage and wondering why our cat was still scratching and we were getting bitten. Vet said it isn't good enough anymore and prescribed Stronghold which definitely did the trick along with Indorex.

ofwarren · 09/02/2021 13:04

We used advantage and it didn't work. The vet didn't make us wait a month for them to prescribe bravecto.
You could actually see it working. One spot on the neck and within an hour, all the cats were scratching like mad as the fleas writhed about and died. Then in another hour, it stopped and I've not seen a flea since. Great stuff.

WinoLino · 09/02/2021 14:57

I'm not sure you need to get pest control round. Fleas aren't pleasant but as far as I'm aware they won't do loads of damage??

You absolutely need to go through the vet though. As long as the cat is properly treated, by killing the whole cycle they will all die in the environment anyway.

If you want to feel like you are actually doing more, right now, while you wait for them to ingest what you put on the cat then before you go to bed tonight, place a bowl (washing up bowl good) of hot soapy water in the room where you have seen them and shine a lamp on the bowl. They will be attracted by the light, jump in, but will be unable to get out because of the grease from the fairy liquid. In the morning you might see a few and feel a little better. Good luck and it's happened to us all at some point Smile

FinallyFluid · 09/02/2021 15:21

Not much use to you at the moment, but Indorex is brilliant at killing anything that might be lurking.

We spray the whole house from top to bottom just as we leave for the airport.

We never have any problems, so once you have knocked this on the head, try and make it an annual thing.

Vickylouisa123 · 30/10/2023 00:13

Treat cat first

Vickylouisa123 · 30/10/2023 00:16

All flea treatment from pet shops are now ineffective as frontline use to only be able to get from vets than ineffective si shops can sell now then vets used advantage but soon that was ineffective so shops can sell now vets use another one at mo soon ad that one gets ineffective that will be in pet shop

GlomOfNit · 30/10/2023 17:04

We used to get Advocat from the vet but they pressed us to try Nexgard Combo instead, which we now get on prescription. It treats all the other parasites too. DON'T trust anything you can just buy over the counter at a shop, it will not work!! The vets in your local area know what's currently working - trust them.

Tumbleweed101 · 30/10/2023 17:18

This is an old thread... however we have really struggled with a flea outbreak this year and tried all sorts including indorex. Nothing worked until we got a flea tablet from the vets for them. Now the fleas seem to have gone, thank goodness.

GillyB1962 · 29/11/2023 10:34

Hi I've just sprayed my bedroom with Indorex and I'm finding lots of different versions online as to when to FIRST hoover afterwards.
Also I've used it on bare floorboards as getting new carpet, should I hoover or mop this area and exactly how long after spraying.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
