Am going bleach free - need tips on how to clean a cat litter box

I have decided to go bleach free and buy eco cleaning products for all the usual reasons so have stocked up on Ecover toilet cleaner, spray etc the only problem I have is the cat litter box. Every day it is emptied and changed and every 3 days I usually soak it in bleach, I have had to buy some disinfectant for the job but ideally want to cut this out too. It absolutely stinks and I need something that will kill the smell and clean it. I think the smell is ingrained into the plastic now so am purchasing a new one, how can I keep it not smelling like a cats toilet too much?

neat white vinegar should neutralise the pee, pour some in and swill it about for a while. Rosemary oil is a good pet smell deodoriser as is lemongrass (used both on my kitchen floor when nutty dog was a puppy)

I had a litter tray for years and never bleached it. I used to empty (obviously!) then scrub with neat washing up liquid, rinse, leave to dry then as per jamila swill with neat white vinegar.

But it still smelled like a cats toilet... cos thats what it is. It made my whole house smell too.

I got a cat flap.

we scoop hte tray daily. that helps.

i just use washing up liquid and an old loo brush and then sprinkle bicarb on it.

then i line it with newspaper.

no smell, but i also think she uses the outdoors as a tray, too.

Considering it is a toilet, can you not use the toilet cleaner?

Unfortunately cats refuse to go outside 2 of them are totally indoors cats anyway nowadays. Just wondered if anyone had come across a magic cure for taking the smell away. We scoop solids out as soon as we spot them and completely change the litter every day but it has a constant cat wee smell.

I really have to stop using bleach, I once asked DP waht smell reminded him of me and he said bleach it's really not good stuff I know.

We put our cat tray outside during the day so it airs as it goes iyswim and when she's sent to the cattery, the empty box goes outside for the same reason. I'm not sure how this'll go down in the winter though - we've only had the cat since March and she was housebound for the first 9 or 10 weeks (not sure if neutered or vaccinated plus impending visit to cattery over Easter made it undesirable to let her out).
