Any recommendations please? Especially the glass.

Glass damp kitchen roll dipped in ash.
What metal is it?

Hadalifeonce · 14/01/2021 12:47

If you only use wood ever.... Wet some newspaper, dip it in the ashes and rub it into the glass. Do not do this if you burn other stuff.

Strawberrylemincake · 14/01/2021 12:54

I have occasionally used coal but rarely. Not sure what metal it is.

Comes off with water and a bit of kitchen roll which I then chuck in the fire. It’s a non-job I do while laying/lighting.

TheQueef · 14/01/2021 12:57

Coal ash sometimes had concrete in it which can scratch the glass, wait for wood ash to scour it.
If it's slightly pitted metal it'll likely be cast iron so a stove polish that matches the colour.
If it's smooth sleek metal it could be steel or ename! Which don't polish up.

this

Strawberrylemincake · 14/01/2021 14:38

Thanks all. Almost certainly cast iron. I’ll give the ash a wee go. Who knew!!

We use Stovax polish from Home Bargains, it doesn't stink so bad the first two burns and it comes in grey.
It lasts ages, think it was £4 but this was about five years ago Grin buffs up well!

I use this with kitchen towel, really good.

I use an old sock dipped in water to clean the glass. I brush the actual stove. The installer said that if you use any form of liquid, even a damp cloth, on the stove itself then it will end up with streaks that are impossible to get out.

Bluntness100 · 14/01/2021 14:56

Hg stove glass cleaner, you buy it on Amazon, squirt on, rub off, job done, it’s excellent.

Longtalljosie · 14/01/2021 14:58

Near fairy liquid. Leave it an hour. Very easy compared to ash, I found...

Gosh that’s a bit of a pain,, much easier to use a squirt on rub off product designed for the task.

Saw recommended and tried a damp used tea bag the other day. Came up a treat.

didireallysaythat · 14/01/2021 20:57

We use dry fine metal wool

tupperwaretowers · 15/01/2021 14:40

The tea bag was for the glass only!!

Strawberrylemincake · 16/01/2021 19:28

Gave it a go with the ashes and it worked fine but there are stubborn dark stains that won’t budge. Any ideas?

Following!

Bar keepers friend, the powder brings the glass up a treat.

Just soapy water for the rest after emptying the ash, and every couple of weeks the whole lot comes out for a good vacuum
