Is it ok to take something 'unpleasant' to the launderette?

I need to wash a large mattress protector that the cat has pooped on - it's too big for our machine.
Is it ok to take it for a service wash or is that not fair on the launderette staff?
Would it be better to not have a service wash and put it in the machine myself or will i have to bin it?

Can you remove the worst of it and then give it to them to wash?

Maybe call them and ask, as a courtesy.

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 12/01/2021 21:01

Urgh! Bin it if you can't wash it at home!

TokyoSushi · 12/01/2021 21:03

At the very least I'd try to sponge it as clean as I could before washing it myself at the laundrette, I wouldn't hand it in for their staff to do.

Unless it is particularly expensive/special though I'd likely bin it.

Better?! There’s no way you can leave that as a service wash. So the question is self service launderette or not at all.

Can you not pre rinse it somewhere? Under your garden tap, if you have one, or in a sink that you then scale out?

DrJump · 12/01/2021 21:08

Some laundrette do pet blankets so it's worth asking what they would prefer you to do.

Chameleon2003 · 12/01/2021 21:23

I think I'll probably bin it. Obviously I've removed everything possible it's just a stain that's left where it's been.

Now that you've removed the (ahem) 'solid matter' just take it to the launderette. Binning perfectly fixable stuff because one can't be arsed to wash it is one of the reasons the planet is fucking up.

Well that's what I thought until I got told off on this thread!

Surely you can just clean the stained bit? Hot water with washing powder + Dettol+ stain remover and a scrubbing brush, then rinse.
Getting it dry might be a bit of a pain in the arse, but probably no need to bin it or go trekking to a launderette when we're all supposed to be in a lockdown.

Weirdfan · 12/01/2021 21:51

Is there a garage near you with the big self service machines? Google Revolution Laundry for locations, I've done dog beds in them before with no problems and I think it cost about £8.

SausagePourHomme · 12/01/2021 21:52

I'm sure they've seen worse tbh

Lucieintheskye · 12/01/2021 22:00

OP ignore the knobs, take it to the launderette, they're used to dealing with dirty washing and cat shit is probably the least worst thing they deal with!

sandieshaw · 12/01/2021 22:03

You could "pre-wash" it in the bath with some laundry detergent. Rinse it through a couple of times and then take it to the launderette for a proper wash?

thirdfiddle · 12/01/2021 22:06

I'd soak the patch with a bit of napisan or sthg in the bath, it'll remove the smell and probably the stain too, or at least turn it into an anonymous discolouration. Then you won't feel bad about having it laundered however you normally would.

AuditAngel · 12/01/2021 22:14

Ok, when this happens in our house I remove as much as I can, spray it, fold it in on itself and take to the laundrette.

I apologise profusely and blame the cat!

They never turn a hair.

Whatthebloodyell · 12/01/2021 22:38

I fail to see the problem with taking a dirty item to somewhere that you are paying for it to be cleaned? Why on Earth should you bin something that can be cleaned and reused? People are weird.

Maves · 17/01/2021 11:11

Bin it ffs! You can't take it to the launderette that's filth. Is cats shutting on beds a thing? Mine never has.
