How much for a plumber to unblock toilet?

I moved in a year ago and the toilet was a bit weird. It would only flush sometimes and couldn't even handle toilet paper. Now it's extremely blocked. I've used every industrial strength drain cleaner I could get my hands on over the months and nothing! The landlord doesn't really respond to me moaning (it goes through estate agent)
I luckily have 2 toilets so we just use the working one. It's time to accept that this is a big blockage and I need a professional!

Curious as to how much it will cost me. 😬

Have you tried a plunger or a drain snake thing? Is it blocked or slow draining?

AdoraBell · 07/01/2021 17:38

No idea but I was advised on here to use a mop. It worked. Not pleasant, but no worse than with a plunger. I soaked said mop in a bleach solution afterwards as it was a new one.

I believe that plumbers charge c£80 call out fee.

Does it flush at all? If so, before you pay, try tipping about a quarter of a bottle of washing up liquid down there and leave it for a while - half an hour. It is heavier than water so sinks to the bottom. Then boil a kettle and tip it in. The greasy wup liquid lubricates the trap, on which the paper may be caught, and can start to free things up.

Had to do our loo 4 times but it seems to have cleared a blockage. It wasn't a year old blockage, however!

Best of luck

Drain cleaner wouldn’t have done that much on a toilet blockage, unfortunately.

You’re renting and you’ve reported it previously. I wouldn’t be paying for a plumber. I would inform the letting agent that if they did not send a plumber around within 5 days you will be booking your own plumber and will deduct the money from the next month’s rent. (I’m an ex LL!)

Whatsthatspookynoise · 07/01/2021 17:51

I've tried the washing up liquid so many times. 😖 I've bought plungers I didn't know existed. If I flush it, there's a big chance it will overflow out of the toilet.
I will definitely message that to the landlord. But he never replies so I'm guessing I'll have to try the mop trick if I can find it on Google.

Have you tried tipping a basin of water in at a height or is it too full?

NoSquirrels · 07/01/2021 17:55

Just email the landlord and the letting agent stating the issue, and what you will do to resolve it if they don’t.

They’ll be in touch quick enough if you talk about not paying them!

Bluntness100 · 07/01/2021 17:58

You can just call Dyno rod snd they will quote over th phone.

Whatsthatspookynoise · 07/01/2021 19:08

I've tried everything I could find on Google multiple times. I've tried the water from a height when the water was low enough. I've spent more money trying to fix it myself than actually calling a plumber. Nothing made it even slightly better. I will have to say I'm not paying rent until it's done. I pay quite a lot to live here, so I assumed the landlord would be good at responding to problems.

I had this, spent a fortune on drain cleaners, rods etc. Then I checked all the drain / sewer access chambers, until I found the one for the toilet. Plants had grown into it & then toilet paper & yuk had got clogged up in it. Gloves on, bin bag, pulled it all out & sorted it. You assume the issue is closer to the toilet end, but more likely to be where it goes into the sewers. Good luck.

Have you tried caustic soda?

It's £60 round here.

Have you kept your receipts for all the stuff you have tried? I would be sending them to them requesting renumeration and a plumber within 7 days to resolve the problem
