How I sort the laundry

I had a revelation this week. My DH was sorting the laundry and he kept on asking me which basket various items should go into. He was getting a bit exasperated, as he couldn't work out my method, and then I realised that my sorting method is highly subjective. Here's how I sort the laundry:

  • Entirely white things, plus the children's sheets which are white with pale grey spots/stripes - except for white dishcloths (see below).
  • Bath towels, dishcloths and tea towels, regardless of colour
  • Pale coloured clothes and table cloths
  • Dark coloured things that don't make me queasy
  • Dark coloured things that do make me queasy

So the DH was confused because his pants and socks go in the queasy pile, whereas my son's socks go in the queasy pile, but his pants go in the non-queasy, or white pile. My pants go in the queasy pile, and my socks go in the dark non-queasy pile.

NB my own pants don't make me queasy, but I want them to have a good long wash with the other really dirty stuff.

I've now typed queasy too many times at it no longer sounds like a word.

Anyway, it all makes perfect sense to me and I can get the laundry sorted very quickly, but nobody else in the house has a hope. Luckily, if someone else is doing the washing, I don't interfere with their sorting method as long as it's sorted by colour in some way.

Is anyone else's laundry sorting method as subjective as mine?

I do towels in one wash, nappies in another and everything else goes in together. If I have something new in vibrant or dark colours, this goes in with the towels

I use the 'Alphabetic Method' based on the first letter of the article e.g. Napkins, Napplies, Pillow case, Pants, Shirt and so on and they sub-divide by the first letter of the colour e.g. Beige, Black, Réd, Russet etc.
To be honest it does take a bit of time to sort it all out but one needs a proper system.
I then load the washing machine in layers based on the above starting with the lowest letter, usually A or B and finish with X or Z. (it doesn't always fit in one go especially if there a a lot of Sheets.)
I repeat the process for tumble drying.

I tried washing underwear on jts own as was suggested and found I had a wash basket full of underwear sat for a week before I had half a load , so I just stick it in with clothes and use dettol wash stuff
Mine is
Towels 60
Bedding 60
Darks 40
Colours - 40 use reusable colour catcher as this machine I have now eats the normal ones
Whites - 40
Dog stuff-60
Floor clothes - 60 when I have enough

Also forgot dirty rugby / football kits on own- have 2 ds and dh that play so a machine full and always shove some dettol cleanser stuff in with that

Dogs stuff I put in this bag thing to wash so I don't have hairs all over the machine , great buy as before i used to have to wipe machine and give it a run on empty to help rid the hairs , now they are all contained in the bag thing.

Whites or mainly whites
Blacks
Greys
Easy care, multicoloured, man made fibre 'non bleeding' items
Reds and pinks
Beiges

I have enough clothes of each colour to make full washes.

Sparrowfeeder · 19/01/2021 00:51

Pale clothes (whites/pastels)
Dark clothes (everything else)
Towels and bathmats
Bedsheets (sometimes mix with towels, if small amount)
Clean kitchen rags and sponges, tea towels
Dirty rags and mop pads
Kitchen stuff is always separate, never mixed with bedding/towels or clothes, cardinal rule.
Dog beds and blankets

Sparrowfeeder · 19/01/2021 00:54

I should say my ‘clean rags’ v ‘dirty rags’ is similar to queasy. Clean is dish sponges, countertop cloths etc, fine to wash with teatowels . Dirty is anything used to clean greasy gunk off oven, spots on floor etc etc.

Oh god I’m going to embarrass myself but since being sent home I’ve gone mad, here goes:
Whites
Black dark grey
Blues and greens
Pink yellow red orange
Light Grey
Towels, mop heads, bath mats dark
Ditto white

I find if I do small quick washes everything comes out fresher and cleaner. I do average 2 washes a day and maybe double at weekends.

Amyheadache · 22/01/2021 08:14

Oh and the bedclothes go through on their own at the weekend...

Lights - 30 or 40 degrees.
Darks - same as above.
Bedding/towels - 60 degrees.
Sofa blankets - 40 degrees.
