Kettle with an easy removable and replaceable scale filter.

I am looking to replace a Russell and Hobbs kettle which annoyingly has a plastic filter to stop scale getting into cups etc. The reason it has been annoying is that from the beginning it won’t stay put and has had to be left out. I keep descaling balls in it and this really helps but would like a kettle that has a decent removable filter. I also don’t want one with a plastic lining and the Russell Hobbs is stainless steel and is great in this respect ang cost around £30 to £40. Would be grateful if you could offer any suggestions. Thank you for bothering to read this.

We don't use a kettle that much - coffee from machine most of the time, but we do live in a hard water area, so limescale is an issue. I have a cheap kettle from a supermarket - Asda, I think and it cost less than a tenner. Once a month, I boil a kettleful of water and add a teaspoon of citric acid. When it's cooled, I use the solution for descaling the coffee maker.

Kettle looks as good as new. If I used the kettle more often, once a month descaling would probably not be often enough, but in any case it's a two minute job although it needs to stand a while. Once it's emptied, it just needs rinsing and it's ready to use.

Thank you for that. Citric acid has been mentioned before in connection with kettles but where do you buy it? Is it the same as vinegar?

I just used distilled (clear) vinegar and water in my kettle, which does a fab job. Also works on our coffee machine, and the washing machine!

My in laws use a filter jug to fill the kettle. Adds an extra step but seems to work for them

We're in a horribly hard water area and use our glass kettle a lot - we need to use either citric acid (a special organic descaler) or lemon juice once a week at least, boil the kettle with the citric solution and then give it a quick scrub inside and out while rinsing out.

Thank you everyone. That is so useful. I am seeking out citric acid and distilled vinegar. I am doing online shopping at the moment so will see if Sainsbury’s or the local chemist do it.

Citric acid (and 5l of white vinegar) available on Amazon and ebay.

This is not what you asked but what I do is have a glass kettle with no exposed element and then when I see limescale I squirt in some lemon juice from Lidil (39p) for twenty minutes and then it's all gone.
