Cleaning a blanket that’s been in the garden

I found a blanket in the garden that’s been hiding under a bush for a couple of years and has moss and mould on it. It has some sentimental value to dh so I’d like to clean it but I don’t want to put it in the washing machine. And I think a bleach solution would damage it. Any thoughts on how to get rid of mould/ fungus?

In the bath tub with some (wool safe?) detergent.
On the washing line to dry as best as possible, then finish drying inside. Keep spread out airing until the summer comes, then on the line on a bright day to get the sunlight to it.

Are launderettes open in your area?

soworried321 · 28/12/2020 18:09

Try dettol mould and mildew remover on a tiny patch first.
I've used it on car seats and a jumperoo and play mat with mildew on and it's not taken the colour out, but it does contain bleach.
It's amazing though.

Why can't you put it in the machine?

thelegohooverer · 28/12/2020 20:22

Thanks. I’ll give those suggestions a go.

I don’t fancy ending up with fungus or mould in my washing machine. And I don’t think it’s fair to bring it to a laundrette either.

I'd give it a preliminary wash in the bath and then give it a couple of runs through the machine, on the hottest setting the item allows.
If you're worried about making your machine dirty, just run an empty 90degree wash afterwards.

HardAsSnails · 28/12/2020 21:06

Don't use anything bleach-based, mould removers etc!

Soak it outside for a day or 2 in cold water with some detergent and disinfectant (if it's not wool use bio detergent), then wring it out and put in washing machine on appropriate cycle.

Then do an empty boil wash cycle to 'sterilise' and clean the machine.

RunningFromInsanity · 28/12/2020 21:07

Hose it down outside and then stick on the hottest washing machine setting.

nevernotstruggling · 28/12/2020 21:38

I'd go with hardassnails suggestion

Hose it down and then maybe bring it to one of those washing machines that they have at service stations. Bring your own washing powder.

Launderette- the big, commercial machines there work wonders

ozymandiusking · 18/04/2022 21:43

Tell him not to be ridiculous and bin it.

Laura199403 · 19/04/2022 18:24

He's 3 and had it since he's been born

ozymandiusking · 27/04/2022 23:21

I'm not talking about your child, if that's what you thought Laura. I'm talking about the OP's husbands blanket.
