Does anyone here have air source heating

Moved into a new place ran on an Ecodan air source system and it's driving me nuts!! Comes on when we've set it to be off. Tried using the "holiday" mode and it still comes on at insane hours. Driving me nuts.

Have had to turn off all of the radiators in the house. The annoying thing is when we try and get it to work 8/10 it doesn't come on. Then suddenly at 3 am it blasts on for several hours when we least need it.

Don't recommend! In case that wasn't already clear. Don't do it to yourselves. Avoid at all costs.

Hi. I have an air source pump fitted outside. It has been a nightmare and currently I have had no hot water for over a week. I feel for you

StillWeRise · 18/12/2020 13:36

this is bad news seeing as how we're all supposed to be getting rid of our gas boilers

northernpixie · 18/12/2020 14:21

We have an Ecodan system, works very well. It will come on when there is a need for hot water, either for the tank or heating. It will also come on when the timer is set to heat water for the tank, often in the early hours and in the late afternoon, so there is plenty of hot water when you need it in the morning and early evening.

If you don't want it coming on overnight then make sure the tank temperature is high enough in the late evening, if it isn't, use the MEL app on your phone to switch it on, it will bring the tank water temperature up so it doesn't need the overnight boost.

The rest is down to your room/radiator thermostats, if they call for hot water then the ASHP will come on to heat the water.

are your systems noisy?
we are considering one, but the ones we had looked at were ugly chunky and noisy.

Megan2018 · 18/12/2020 14:30

Ours is brilliant! We have underfloor heating downstairs and radiators upstairs. Ours is a Samsung one though.

It did take us a while to get the hang of it, but now it’s great (2 years old). It’s virtually silent in the house-the fan on the actual pump outside you can hear but ours is tucked away some distance from the house so only hear it in the shed Smile
It probably depends a lot on how it’s installed I guess?

Ohhiiii · 18/12/2020 14:36

We had one in a new build house and it broke after 5 years and cost several thousand to replace..... Was very happy to go back to gas when we moved!

Ohhiiii · 18/12/2020 14:37

Oh and you couldn't turn off the bathroom towel rail when the water tank was heating up so in the middle of summer the bathroom would be hot!!!

Someonesayroadtrip · 18/12/2020 14:40

Wow, all new homes are supposed to be alternative heating by 2023, so this isn't great news.

Megan2018 · 18/12/2020 14:48

@Ohhiiii that issue with bathroom radiators exists in lots of other hearing systems. I’ve lived in houses with gas and oil heating that did that. Nothing to do with air source.

Megan2018 · 18/12/2020 14:51

Meant to add-it’s something to do with gravity fed hot water ststems I think and not the heating source. It’s common anyway!

QueenOfJammyDodgers · 18/12/2020 15:33

Thank you for the replies all.

Yes it's noisy. Sound decibels of a loud kettle. Quite annoying and has lead to a few sleepless nights.

Wanting to return to gas as well.

Spoke with the previous tenants and they said they found it to be a nightmare.

@QueenOfJammyDodgers it sounds like a very poor set up, I’ve never experienced this and we have 3 homes in the extended family on air source as well as ours.

QueenOfJammyDodgers · 18/12/2020 16:58

Thank you I'm going to have someone come and look at it. Hoping it's faulty and can be fixed.

northernpixie · 18/12/2020 17:54

Yes, sounds faulty, little noise from ours, just a low hum from the pump when it's running, less noisy than the fridge.
