Long lasting washing machine?

sergeantmajor · 18/12/2020 10:10

So our washing machine has died, perfect timing. It's a Zanussi, 10kg capacity, spent about £500 from memory about 5 years ago. This time I'm prepared to double the budget for something that lasts longer.

Is Miele worth it? Are other pricey brands comparable - Samsung, Bosch etc - cos there are not many Miele ones that are big enough?

My pet hate is the digital controls every product insists on having, which is just one more thing to go wrong, when a twisty knob works much better.

Please share your washing machine wisdom!

My Miele is six years old and still going strong. It has twisty knobs as well.

ClosedAuraOpenMind · 18/12/2020 10:20

just replaced our washing machine, which was 13 years old when it died. it was a Bosch, and we got another Bosch

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/12/2020 14:05

My Miele shredded its drive belt within the first year Hmm . Was repaied and I hope it has a long , purposeful lifespan but I obviously got a rogue one .

My previous Bosch 9kg was brilliant for over 10 years but the newer ones are not built the same .

The new Mieles have wifi! I don't want wifi, I want a twisty knob. All the ones that are the top dependable brands now come with bells and whistles and I just want a tank. What's wrong with these people??

Can you get your repaired? Interesting that you are prepared to spend more money... My latest experience with large appliances is that I feel like I'd spend less money next time as I've decided spending more doesn't mean it'll be more reliable!

Motnight · 18/12/2020 14:55

Don't buy a Bosch! I have had to have my one replaced 3 times in 3 years due to them stopping working. Each time Bosch has agreed that the issue is the washing machine, so it has been free of charge but I would far rather have a working machine that lasts for longer than 11 months!

pinkbalconyrailing · 18/12/2020 14:58

my parents still have the miele they got as wedding present 49 years ago Shock
my own miele is 5 years old and good as new. I hope it will last a good few years longer.

Topseyt · 18/12/2020 15:10

We've actually done very well out of Bosch in this family.

My previous one was 15 years old when it finally gave up the ghost, and had done five people's laundry (a load most days) for all of that time. My new one is currently 3 years old. A varioperfect with eco-silence drive.

My mother's has only recently died at the grand old age of 26 years. She has just bought a new one. I think it is the same model as mine.

I also have a Bosch tumble dryer which is 11 years old and has so far not given any trouble. Fingers crossed there that I haven't just jinxed it.

I agree that they seem to be built slightly differently now. I don't think they are necessarily assembled in Germany anymore.

DramaAlpaca · 18/12/2020 15:13

I have a Siemens which must be about 15 years old at this stage. The only repair we've ever had to do is replace the brushes twice.

FreeButtonBee · 18/12/2020 16:01

I have a 13 year old Miele (and 3 kids under 8 who do a lot of muddy sport). The spin speed is probably a bit lower than what you'd get these days and I think we may be on our last year or so but it is so good. I will defo replace it with another. It also has a 90 degree wash which is impossible to find anymore so I am loathe to give it up as it is amazing for vomit covered bedding.

FreeButtonBee · 18/12/2020 16:03

and it has twisty knobs too. I will be really upset when it dies. I know what you mean about wifi and all that nonsense! I don't want russian hackers turning up the temperature on my woollens thank you very much

bigbluebus · 18/12/2020 16:18

Do you live in a hard water area? If so then 5 years seems to be about average life span of a washing machine and I'm not sure that splashing out on an expensive model will make any difference (speaks from experience)

LadyFuschia · 18/12/2020 16:25

We have a Miele which is between 7 & 10 years old - in a hard water area. It’s still fine. DH had to repair it once with YouTube help as the hose was punctured by a hair slide but mechanics have been good, washing all sorts! Though now I feel I’m jinxing things and it will explode tomorrow Wink

geogteach · 18/12/2020 16:31

Recently had to replace our Miele after 16 years in hard water area, had also coped with 3 kids in reusable nappies during its lifetime . Happy with the new one too

bilbodog · 18/12/2020 16:47

Get the cheapest miele unless you need all those other programs and if you can afford it a water softner.

LoopyGremlin · 18/12/2020 16:55

I’ve had my Miele for 14 years and have never had any issues yet! Will definitely buy another (but not with wifi!)

plannit · 18/12/2020 16:55

Bosch.

Our last one lasted 17 years!

FinallyFluid · 18/12/2020 16:58

Washing machine and tumble drier purchased together twenty years ago, never had a moments trouble with either and the tumble drier lives in the shed.

ginislife · 18/12/2020 17:36

My last Miele lasted 20 years. My current one is around 5 and has knobs !

NigellaAwesome · 18/12/2020 17:39

Whilst I have loved my Bosch washer dryers, we have been very unlucky with them. Only lasted 4 years each.

I have just bought a Grundig which the manager in Currys raved about. Apparently very long lasting. I don't like it as much as the Bosch though. Quite clunky.

buckleten · 18/12/2020 17:42

We are on our second Bosch washer, the first one lasted 15 years! All my appliances are now Bosch and I have not been disappointed..

skankingpiglet · 18/12/2020 20:17

We had a Bosch which lasted about 10 years, but heard the quality has gone down so it was replaced with a Miele about 4 years ago. It has not had an easy life with DD2's cloth nappies, 2 lots of potty training, my very dusty work clothes, and all of DH's cycling and gym gear, but it is still working as good as new. No wifi (thankfully), and a twisty knob. It was around £600 and came with a 7 year warranty.
My only complaint is that I think it must be made of solid lead. The delivery men really struggled to get it into the house, and I am dreading something eventually going wrong and having to pull the bloody thing back out.

FrogFairy · 18/12/2020 20:19

I bought my Miele for £500 from Allders online in early 2004. It was the cheapest model with a honeycomb drum. I think these days the cheapest Miele is around £650

It has not missed a beat, though I now feel a bit twitchy that I am tempting fate and it will croak on me.

isthismylifenow · 18/12/2020 20:26

My first Miele last 21 years and last year I bought a new one. It is the bottom of the range entry level one, as I didn't want all the bells and whistles like some have. I also wanted a turning knob without all the electronics and a drawer to put powder in.
It's a 7kg though. And has a 20 and 30 minute wash that really does wash well.

Look at the cycle times of the new machines in other brands. They are ridiculously long.

incenseandpeppermints · 18/12/2020 21:01

My last machine was Hotpoint, 11kg, lasted 6 years and did 12 washes weekly. It was £329. Only one repair - belt drive. New one also Hotpoint, 10kg, it was £299.
