How do you make your house smell nice?

Mainly DS's room 🤣
I air the rooms every morning for at least 10 mins, sometimes after lunch too. Bedding is washed once a week. Wooden floors with a rug/carpet which is hoovered as and when Lego allows. No dirty laundry in the bedrooms.

More fresh air. Open the window and close the door, as long as you can, at least an hour.

Do they still sell shake 'n' vac? Or bicarb on the rug/carpet for 20 minutes, then hoover it up.

Otherwise, a liberal dose of Lynx and close the door Xmas Grin

No food upstairs and no smelly bins (empty regularly, and also . Or smelly dog. I tumble all our bedding and towels with wool dryer balls that I drop lavender oil onto. Also sometimes lavender bags on radiators too. I like lavender!

To have a house smelling nice means no pets or children or husbands.

I'm fucked then

LutinDeSapin · 16/12/2020 10:38

🤣 I would freeze if it was open an hour. It's often open all day in spring/summer/autumn. They aren't allowed food in their rooms and they don't have bins either.

Can't do lavender, I'm allergic to it.

I have these candles - smell gorgeous and not expensive

I also burn scented oil in a little oil burner.

Iamblossom · 16/12/2020 12:21

You could put one in the hallway and/or landing for a bit and smell would float into their rooms?

I use them downstairs mainly to get rid of cooking smells.

DownToTheSeaAgain · 16/12/2020 13:28

I open all the windows in the back of the house during daylight. It is chilly but I sit on a hot water bottle to work. Confused

timeforawine · 16/12/2020 13:30

I use an air purifier in the living room (as the door stays closed) and the kitchen, not instant but they do work.

This ^ My house used to smell beautiful. Sigh.

MinesAPintOfTea · 16/12/2020 13:38

Can you find the source of the smell? We had a terrible problem for a while which I tracked down to some sweaty old towels. No amount of airing, floor cleaning etc worked, because that wasn’t the problem. Binned those towels (hot wash and sunshine didn’t get the smell out) and the problem was solved.

Duvet (not the cover), mattress, rubbish under bed, towels, pe kit, secret food stash would be my suspicions.

LutinDeSapin · 16/12/2020 14:04

Towels are kept in bathroom. I washed his pillow this week. He doesn't do sport so won't be a PE kit, pretty sure it's not a good stash as he doesn't have pocket money, doesn't go anywhere without me and there's no shop in our village. I sniffed his mattress and duvet and thought they were ok, but I could wash the duvet again.

Mattress, pillow, duvet protectors and wash those regularly too? Good luck!

Teenage boys rooms just smell
My Ds' don't smell but their rooms do.
No pets don't eat upstairs
Think it may be trainers and possibly hormones!

incenseandpeppermints · 16/12/2020 17:48

Scented sachets on radiators are wonderful.
Primark do them
I have bought several here and recommend highly:

Nanalisa60 · 16/12/2020 19:11

Teenage boys just smell, it’s nothing to do with how clean they are it’s something to do with there hormones, I remember my boys just had a grease smell, they showered twice a day, clean cloths every day, and clean bedding every week, In fact clean pillowcases every other day. The smell just disappeared when they hit about 18/19.

LutinDeSapin · 17/12/2020 06:23

I've a couple of years before he's a teenager! We keep trainers on the porch but he does occasionally wear slippers, I'll have to track them down.

We don't have radiators, but those bags will make a good gift for the GP's! Thanks.

Use zoflora when washing the floors - you will thank me later.

I have an old house with tall ceilings and it's the only thing that keeps a lasting scent through my house. I do use quite a bit of it though and they have a Christmas one u can get in b&m that's devine 😊

It’s true actually, when we were house hunting (so so many houses) there was a definite “teen” smell. I adore the smell of my little boy asleep (and my dog tbf) but tween girl is definitely no longer as sweet smelling.
Hellotheresweet · 17/12/2020 08:01

10 mins? That’s not enough!

All morning here, and quite wide. We are out then generally so no problem with cold. Then home and I close them, and close them immediately

I always have a neom candle on in my kitchen and lounge.

And my home is clean. Very clean.

So many visitors comment on lovely smell. I love it

Hellotheresweet · 17/12/2020 08:03

You won’t freeze

Open his window and close his bedroom door. Leave for 3 hours or so. Then close

LutinDeSapin · 17/12/2020 08:23

I would invalidate my house insurance if I went out all morning and left the windows wide open Hmm not to mention the "hey, please burgle me" message sent out. It's -3 outside right now, leaving the windows open for 3 hours is crazy! DH is working from home and uses DS's room. Maybe it's him 🤣

I never get the whole leave your windows open for an hour thing. I’d friggen freeze too. 😂

I use a humidifier op, some drops of essential oil on it, they go for six to ten hours based on the type you get. They cost about twenty quid from Amazon

userxx · 17/12/2020 09:01

My windows are always open, not been burgled yet. I love fresh clean air, it makes a massive difference. Stale air in houses makes me feel 🤢

He’s 11 and he doesn’t do any sport?

Depends where you life. Burglary rate here pretty much zero. When was the last time you read or heard about someone being house burgled recently?

They have plummeted as no one wants second hand TVs and cameras and hi fis anymore!
