Home made reed diffuser refills - anyone got tips?

Hello all,

I'm pregnant and SO sensitive to smells right now - gagging on the slightest mildest thing!

So a couple of neals yard reed diffusers have made the past couple of months bearable, BUT they haven't lasted well and need refilling.

Their refills are £££ so I'm wondering about making my own. Due to pregnancy I'm leaning towards trying to be low-chemical. Anyone got tips?

I read that augeo multi clean (??) is a good base to use - never heard of it before but apparently a 'natural' solvent made from glycerine... If anyone has thoughts on it I'd love to hear! But basically any homemade, reasonably low-chemical refill recipes that you rate would be great, and much appreciated.

Thanks! :)

Oh what a good idea for a thread!

So sorry I've no clue and it never occurred to me you could make your own, but can I follow with interest? Smile

I tried making my own - online advise said vodka with essential oils. We had some old cheap vodka so used that. The smells just didn’t last though

I use candle perfumes from a company called 4candles. (Yes, really). Recommend by a mumsnetter a few years ago.

Thanks @Dizzywizz, yes I heard bad things about vodka too, the augeo stuff is meant to be better.

@Al1langdownthecleghole, ooh that sounds promising! Are they these ones? www.4candles.co.uk/candle-making-fragrance/escentscia-oils.html

I thought I'd just use a nice essential oils blend for the smell itself - do you use these scents 'neat' in the diffuser or dilute them? And if dilute, then what with please?

Grateful for the replies! :)

Yes that’s the ones. I use them in an electric diffuser with water though not with reeds.

I Think I’ve read you can use baby oil as an alternative to alcohol as the base.

I used an online recipe with baby oil, rubbing alcohol and essential oils. No smell whatsoever!

How about using some natural beauty products as a home fragrance. Something like the soaps from Lush?. Just bought some as a present and the whole room smells gorgeous.
