Anyone have a washer dryer?

Hello all!

Does anyone have a washer dryer and can give me their opinion on one? Are they ok for drying clothes? (Heard quite negative things), does anyone recommend a certain one?

I'm very short for space hence why looking for a combined one.

Thanks x

I used to have a zanussi. Never again! It was a great washer but after 3 hours of drying, the clothes were just hot and very damp. To get things anywhere near dry, you could only load about 3 light things in. And while it was taking so long to do nothing, you couldn't use your washing machine.

I had a Miele WD, which started to wear out after about 13y, and I replaced it with a John Lewis (ie AEG) WD a couple of years ago.

Both reliable machines, excellent washers and adequate/mediocre driers. We generally prefer line drying and only tumble when we have to. You can't really do an efficient non-stop wash and tumble load, as the max drier load is generally about half of the washing load. We find it doesn't dry a full load to cupboard dry without creasing, though it copes well with smaller loads. This makes it excellent for the occasional "Argh! I need my xyz tonight!" crisis.

The only reason we have a washer drier, rather than separate machines, is that we don't have the space for two machines. It's a good compromise. But do you have the space to stack a drier on top of the washer? It's perfectly feasible, and a sensible use of space, even though it's not commonly done in the UK.

I have one in a tenanted flat and it's brilliant - dries much quicker than my independent one i have at home. I believe it's a meile.

sanityisamyth · 09/12/2020 23:05

I have this one and it's fab. Washes and dries well.

I have a beko pro and it dries!

Cillmantain · 09/12/2020 23:18

I had a Zanussi years ago.
It washed well but the dryer was useless.

HMSBeagle · 09/12/2020 23:20

Off topic, but I have condenser driver in my airing cupboard. I had a combined one once and it really put me off. My friend has a drier quite happily long in a plastic storage mini, half height shed type thing outside in the garden. Been out there for many years.

Elouera · 09/12/2020 23:21

I had one 6yrs ago. It was useless! Fine as a washing machine, but unless the dryer was on for 3+hrs and costing +++, it left clothes wet! Maybe some have improved, but check reviews closely and look at alternatives too.

I now hang clothes over doors and throughout the house and use a demidifier on the laudndry setting. Brilliant!

Woohoowoowoo · 09/12/2020 23:25

We have one and use it for occasional dying. Most have a smaller capacity for drying than washing. So you have to split the load if you're drying it.

I tend to dry towels and sheets in mine. Or like PP, when I need a school uniform in an emergency.

Woohoowoowoo · 09/12/2020 23:26

I also find with ours, if I do a double spin, it dries things much quicker/better than without.

SpecialToffee · 09/12/2020 23:27

We had a Zanussi one and then a Bosch. Zanussi was OK but the drier in the Bosch wasn’t up to much. Took ages to dry and left the clothes smelling musty, although that may be because we didn’t use the drier much.

When the Bosch died we bought a standard washing machine and a dehumidifier which works well.

I had a Hoover washer / dryer, ok to dry one pair of tights if you have a few hours before you need them. Utterly useless.

SeraphinaDombegh · 09/12/2020 23:41

We have one due to space issues. It's a John Lewis one and honestly, it's really really good. We had an older John Lewis one that didn't dry quite so well, but so long as you take a few things out from the wash, the new one dries beautifully. Highly recommend.

Labobo · 10/12/2020 08:23

I had a Zanussi. It was great. Absolutely depended on it when DC were small.

WillowintheUK · 10/12/2020 09:04

When we downsized I got persuaded to get one. I now have a proper tumble dryer in the garden shed. In fact I’d forgotten that my WM is supposed to dry too. Never ever use it as it just doesn’t do what it’s supposed to.

pizzaandcats · 10/12/2020 09:08

We just bought a hotpoint washer dryer against the advice of pretty much everyone! It washes well and we have a maiden set up for half of the load and dry the other half in the machine. It takes an age but still less time than drying everything on maidens. Will be straight back on the washing line as soon as we can though!

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 10/12/2020 09:15

I have a beko and it's OK - you can maybe dry 3/4 of a normal load. To be honest, I don't like using a dryer anyway, I always end up shrinking clothes, so it's really only used for towels and bedding in winter so a washer/dryer is fine for me.

I bought a heated airer when me and DH both started working from home as needed something with a smaller footprint than my traditional clothes horse, and it is a revelation! Load it up and turn it on, dry clothes in the morning and it's only 6p an hour to run.

peachescariad · 10/12/2020 09:15

I'd avoid one....if the dryer goes wrong you're without a washing machine.

Confusedandshaken · 10/12/2020 09:35

We bought a flat that came with a new built-in Zanussi washer-dryer. It was useless. It took hours and the clothes either came out damp and steamy or overdried to a creased frazzle. There didn't seem to be any middle ground. It was an attic flat with no access to any outside space so we had no choice but to use it. After 8 months we gave up and bought a washing machine we plumbed in and a stand alone condensing tumble drier that is currently in the bedroom. It doesn't look great and I hope to have it boxed in one day but at least we have dry clothes.

lazyakita · 10/12/2020 17:36

We have a Bosch and it's decent. Obviously I'd love separate machines, but space won't allow. I'd much rather be with the washer dryer than without, though. It's especially good for towels.

Werk · 10/12/2020 17:40

I have a John Lewis one - I only use it for towels (which I part dry before tumbling) and in emergencies. It is ok, you can only dry a few things at a time though.

I am currently in a rental property which has a separate drier and would definitely go for a separate one in the future if I have space

katy1213 · 10/12/2020 17:48

I've barely used the dryer, like about two or three times; but something went wrong with the programmer and then the washer wouldn't work either - cost half as much as I'd originally paid to get it fixed. I wouldn't bother again.

beckyyl · 10/12/2020 19:07

Thanks everyone for your opinions!

Never ever ever again. We have a samsung eco bubble washer dryer and in the 2 years we have had it, nothing has ever come out dry! It's either damp, creased to high hell, stinking or all three.

Now the machine has broken down with various faults and we are going to replace with just a standalone washer.

Seriously please don't do it.
