Silicone Bakeware

Has anyone got any?
Is it good?
And will it give us all some nasty disease? (as DH seems to think)

I bought a silicone baking tray (it hasn't arrived yet though) It looks like a great idea for cookware...doesn't rust...is dishwasher safe, freezer safe, won't warp, easy to wash....

Is it too good to be true?

TIA

Will watch this with interest, it's cheap in Lidl atm, have been wondering whether to buy some.

ArmadilloDaMan · 21/10/2007 08:42

I think it's fab. I have got a few pieces and I love them. SO much easier to clean adn to get stuff out. Easy to store (cos you can fold them up). The stuff I've got can go from oven to freezer. It cools down a lot quicker than metal/ceramic stuff so less chance of being burned.

The only downside I find is that because it isn't rigid you need to have a baking tray to get it in and out the oven, BUt apart from that it is all good.

I would say I think it is more hygenic as it is easier to clean and the good quality non-stick stuff you can basically just wipe out.

ooooh is it!? I'm going there this morning to do my food shopping...

oh sorry...xposts...

I was wondering about the fact it is so bendy...they sell lasagna dishes in silicone...I had visions of it slopping about all over the place....I guess if you just pop it on a normal tray it will be fine....

yes its fantastic

I have a loaf tin and it works just so well! would never go back to anything else..

when i ahve few extra spare pennies will invest in some more... victoria sandwich 'tins' are next on my to get list!

Littlefish · 21/10/2007 08:47

It's absolutely fantastic! I use mine all the time.

I've got muffin tins which make perfect muffins every time. You don't need to use paper cases either.

Apparently the only thing which doesn't cook very well in them is yorkshire pudding (according to my mum).

No idea why.

There are some you can get which have a rigid edge which solves the wobbling around problems.

OOOhhh Thankyou ladies I'm all excited now...especially at the thought of them being in Lidls...and I can get some today [sad emoticon]

They sound brilliant

And you don't think the fact they are silicone will have some starnge health risk?? Dh is convinced it can't be very good

susiecutiebananas · 21/10/2007 08:56

where is he getting that from though? silicone is used safely in hundreds and hundreds of healthcare items which go inside people... surely if unsafe, that wouldn't be allowed?... plus its hypoallergenic....

moon cups are mde from silicone... if there were a risk, half of MN would disappear

ProfYaffle · 21/10/2007 08:59

I think I'll be paying a visit this afternoon too! (to Lidl I mean, I'm not broadcasting my toilet habits)

ArmadilloDaMan · 21/10/2007 09:00

susie is right about silicon carrying less of a risk.

It is less likely to harbour germs etc in first place and you can boil clean it if necessary.

It's used more and more for medical stuff because it is less likely to harbour an infection.

ludaghoul · 21/10/2007 09:02

I think it was something he heard about silicone breast implants related to breast cancer? He seems to think silicone might affect the food...especially if it is heated?

Well I'm sold anyway...I'm sure he'll never know the difference what ever I cooked the food in! and as he never cooks anyway, he shouldn't grumble

OP posts:
lulu25 · 21/10/2007 09:05

the problem with silicon breast implants is that they can fail and release silicon gel into the tissues

i looove my silicon muffins pan and madeleines pan.

also silicon ice cube trays are aces

lulu25 · 21/10/2007 09:06

silicone even

ludaghoul · 21/10/2007 09:10

Ahhh.... I thought it was something to do with implants bursting....I would suspect it is a different kind of substance entirely
