Dyeing fabric

I'd like to dye a babygro which is really sentimental as my DD wore it home from hospital.
We had a disaster where I soaked it in washing powder to get poo out, and it has a really patchy faded tie dye effect.

My questions are:
Will the dye cover evenly since it's going on different colours?
Can I mix two dye packs to try to get the right shade? Or would I be better with a dilute solution of a darker dye?
(It's mid pink, the available dyes seem to be fuschia and powder pink...)

What's it made of? Cotton will dye with cold water dyes, but polyester won't. If it's a poly/cotton mix you might end up with a paler result or it might be heathery.

Yes you can mix colours. Mix a little bit in some cold water and try it out on a bit of kitchen roll.

Bear in mind that dyes are transparent, a bit like stained glass. Dyeing a patchy garment will give a patchy result unless the patchiness is really faint and the dye's strong.

That's really useful, thank you.
This is the offending garment!
It's made of cotton, hopefully the mottled effect shows in the picture.

Use a colour remover first then dye. Stitching is usually done with polyester thread, which doesn't dye, so your best bet is to use as close a colour to the original.

Alternatively, just tye die it with a contrasting colour - that would mean you wouldn't need to remove the original colour and you could dye an old t-shirt or something at the same time.

Personally, I would try the 'colour run' stuff to see if you could even out the fading.

Congratulations on your new baby.

That's a top tip about colour remover, to hopefully even it out a bit first.
I don't want to change the colour, just have it even again.

Try the Colour Run type stuff. The Dylon pre-dye remover is more expensive and a bit more complicated.

I would guess that the uneven colour might be because you rinsed under a hot tap, but that might not be the case.

I found the Dylon dyes pretty good for going a darker colour without needing the pre-dye. With a new baby, you'll probably end up with stains and accidentally bleached clothes.

Of course, we'll be wanting another photo. Smile
Aren't babies just so cute.

It was a cold water soak in bio powder that was the culprit!

She's my third, so I'm pretty good at poo stains, just turns out my methods are not suitable for colours!

Some clothes fade strangely. Usually it is pale blue for me.
