Dishwasher with auto-door opening

My aging dishwasher has packed up and I need to replace it. Modern dishwashers have so many new features and one feature that seems to be really good is auto-door opening. This will open the door slightly at the end of the cleaning cycle so that the dishes dry much quicker and more thoroughly. I thought this feature was only reserved for stupidly expensive dishwashers but there are quite a few options available around the mid-budget level.

Does anyone have this feature? How good is it? Any comments or suggestions?

My Bosch has it.
Only operates on the Eco programme, and then not when the childlock is activated (my kids are 14 & 18 so not a problem, but the dog kept knocking against the door and opening it!).
The Eco programme is 3h15m, I just put it on in the evening after tea, it finishes as I'm going to bed and I leave it and empty in the morning when it is dry. If I wanted to empty it when it finishes it wouldn't be dry (it would on the other settings, if it's full in the day I'll sometimes do a 1hr programme and it finishes dry).

I have just sent my Miele to the dishwasher graveyard and it had this feature. I really miss it (mainly the dishwasher itself but also the opening feature). My new Bosch doesn’t have it and is generally less good in comparison, but it was all I could afford at the time. I will one day own another self opening Miele and then my life will be complete again!

My basic IKEA one has it, it comes with annoying beeps too.

opinionatedfreak · 28/11/2020 21:21

@techiemom I have a miele that has auto door opening.

I love it. I will never buy a dishwasher without it again.

@Littlebeach I have turned the beeps off on mine - might be worth reading the manual to see if you can do it on yours too?

Not for me. The steam causes a mark on the granite worktop that protrudes above it...it’s integrated

claireb7rg · 28/11/2020 21:50

Our neff has it but we turned it off as it opened fully and we didn't want the cats sitting on the open door

Cynderella · 29/11/2020 10:17

We have this and I like it. Not as much as I like the cutlery tray rather than basket though - that's a must-have for me now.

AlwaysLatte · 29/11/2020 10:23

I didn't know that was a thing! Our relatively new Miele doesn't. I wouldn't like that though, surely it stays cleaner with the door shut, esp if you have nosy pets. What is the reason?

weepingwillow22 · 29/11/2020 10:47

I think the reason is that the items get drier because the door open allows better evaporation.

We have this on our new miele and to be honest I don't think it makes a huge difference in drying though. Plastic still comes out wet.

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 29/11/2020 10:55

We have this on our AEG. I can take it or leave it tbh. I much preferred our Bosch as it was completely silent. The AEG isn’t massively noisy, but not silent so it goes on overnight.

Cynderella · 29/11/2020 11:52

Ours only opens a couple of inches. I wouldn't want it to open completely,

FrownsAndDimples · 29/11/2020 17:24

Ours opens just enough to let the steam out. As others says my children's plastic stuff still comes up a little wet. But otherwise great. I love the feature along with cutlery drawer instead of basket.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 29/11/2020 17:30

we've got this on our AEG
it's good, just opens a few inches so things dry well. However in my v.small kitchen the dishwasher sits under my main cooking surface, and it has occasionally pinged open and pummelled me in the ovary when cooking.

JellyfishandShells · 29/11/2020 17:31

My Bosch does it

Thecobwebsarewinning · 01/12/2020 21:09

Our theee year old Miele does this. It doesn’t seem particularly effective TBH.

@weepingwillow22 Keeping the rinse aid topped up ensures the plastics dry properly. Sadly our machine only takes a tiny amount of rinse aid at a time so it’s gone from a job that needed doing monthly to something I have to do every few days.

After reading @Parrish’s comment I actually left my cosy living room to go into the cold, cold kitchen and check the granite worktop over the DW. It doesn’t seem to be steam damaged as yet. Phew!
