In the simplest terms <<idiot alert>> please tell me how to measure a window for curtains?

Have two books but they make it soooo complicated. I want to make some tab top curtains.

Do I:
a) Measure drop from bottom of pole to floor and then add enough for hems.

b) measure width of window but then what? What is return?

I also need someone to tell me about pattern repeats.

Speak slowly and I might just get it.

TIA

Measure the width, then double it, to allow for gathers in curtains.

not sure about length.

Will watch this thread as I can't even work out how to measure the windows to buy curtains let alone make them Think I have had to return almost every pair i've bought!!

Thank you TF. I have bought some fabric as it was a bargain, I have more than 10 metres but it is for french doors and a large sash.

Will measure.

Do you know what the return bit is.

Where are you buying the material from? I've taken a sketch of the window with all the measurements (incl the measurement of the curtain rail to the top of the window) with me when buying material before now. The person selling the material will be able to explain all about repeats and stuff. I usually buy a metre or two more to have enough left over for cushion covers and tie backs to match. Hth.

Have just read here tab tops only need 50% fullness, so 1 and a half x the width measurement.

dont know what return is, sorry.

TF I have just found s similar site and have worked out I will need 2.5 widths, thank you for that link.

Simply, I just bought a 10m roll in a fabric warehouse place near here. Should be enough. It's the width bit I always get in a muddle with. Thanks though. There is a good C&H place in town but I'm always scared to ask as I won't admit I don't what they are talking about!!

Everyone in my local Laura Ashley shop knows I can't sew for toffee. I pop in when the sales are on and I buy material for MIL to make curtains up for me. She makes cushion covers, duvet covers and pillowcases for me, too. I can only manage to sew on a name tag and do simple repairs. Good luck with your curtain making.

returns are used when making valances or boxed pelmet covers - basically refers to the two sides - if that makes sense.
Also with tab tops, am not sure you need to get too complicated with matching pattern repeats unless you are using odd numbers of widths.
