How to remove serious limescale build up

About every 3 years I clean the utility room sink Grin

It's really only used for washing rugby boots and paintbrushes so gets in a bit of a state.

It's also really old crappy plastic - presumably moved in there when old owners did the extension.

Here's a pic of horrendous limescale build up around the taps - any products / ideas for blasting it off???

I once had to clean a sink at work that was in a similar state - viakal sorted it after a couple of applications.

FusionChefGeoff · 16/11/2020 10:52

Oh yes I remember the Viakal ads from ages ago!! Thanks for the reminder!

When I needed to clean something equally difficult I used kettle descaler little sachets neat over it, kept an eye on it to make sure it didn’t damage anything- took about 10 minutes x

Vinegar!!! Soak some kitchen towel or rags and wrap aroung taps. Tie bags with vinegar around end of taps and soak I have done this for a couple of hours and removed lime scale on taps and sink

Nhsisfucked · 16/11/2020 20:12

Get a 2pence piece, wet it and the tap and rub it on it, it’ll just fall off, I don’t why or how but it does!

Fluffycloudland77 · 16/11/2020 20:17

Citric acid from the chemists.

FippertyGibbett · 16/11/2020 20:20

Vinegar soaked on kitchen roll. Leave it for a couple of hours.
I think it has to be white vinegar ?

This - any old vinegar will remove the limescale but brown vinegar might stain the white plastic so for this particular job I’d recommend white.

You might need to repeat it a few times scrubbing at the loosened limescale and then replacing the kitchen towel.

FusionChefGeoff · 16/11/2020 21:08

I have white vinegar and I'm sure there's a descaler sachet somewhere. Right, wish me luck!

Kilrock gel is very good as it just sits there on top fizzing away, no run away. Comes with a brush applicator too.

icelollycraving · 16/11/2020 21:14

I like viakal. I always like kilrock stuff but didn’t rate the gel brush on one. Put up an after pic please Smile

TheTeenageYears · 16/11/2020 21:24

If you do need to try Viakal go for the one in the bottle rather than the spray - Lidl's own is excellent. It's thicker than the spray so more effective. Saturate kitchen roll and leave overnight. For things like ends of taps and shower heads you can put in a plastic bag and leave soaking.

OMG!!

That tap style has totally taken me back, but I can’t remember where to! My memory is both really vivid and totally failing at the same time.

Can we have an after photo in case it jogs my memory some more? Grin

I’ve recently tried the Kilrock on my bathroom cold tap and it didn’t do a thing. I was so disappointed as it was recommended by two friends. Think I will try white vinegar.
