There are flys congregating around the sky light in kitchen and around the lower windows as well - just appeared yesterday (I feels like) and they are slugish easy to kill but seem to replace themselves. i cannot find a source - no smell of dead mouse etc. - we have cats.

Is this a symptom of mild october or should i be worried - do i need to call Anthea?!!!!

They are probably cluster flies coming from your loft. We have had them. Revolting things. They seem to come down from the loft to die a slow death. You might want to think about getting someone in to deal with them - our loft was full of them. Apparently they nest there all year and come out to play in April/May and September/October.

Thank you Piggy - I will look into that. I closed up the loft door last month - after having it open all summer (helps keep it cooler upstairs) - but god knows what is up there - it is not boarded so we can't really explore... ugh...

Do their wings look smaller than the usual housefly? That's a give away sign of cluster flies - it means they can crawl all over each other more easily. Look them up on the internet. As long as you have a strong stomach.

the wings look normal - not that i go around comparing i think google is next - i will wait till after i have eaten cheers!

I had this a week or so ago, and a very dead mouse was in fact discovered behind the toy cupboard -

The flies had hatched out by then, there must have been over 50 around the windows.
Once I'd opened the windows and got rid of the "corpse" there were never any more.

I would interrogate the cats again
