Dishwasher help?!

Following on from another post I’ve decided that as a family of 6 we need (I want!) a dishwasher. I don’t know how we’ve managed so long without one tbh!

Is this the right place to ask for tips and things I need to keep in mind when purchasing/running one please? I’m completely clueless when it comes to dishwashers, didn’t grow up with one and have never used one. Please help Smile

Do people mind saying where they got their dishwashers from by any chance? Just to give us ideas of places to look?

@dixiedo how do you fit a integrated one? That’s the reason I’m thinking freestanding- as I don’t know how we’d do an integrated one Confused

Your one sounds good- off to google!

I have a freestanding one. Came from AO.com . Think freestanding are easier to deal with. Do you not need a carcass to fit an integrated machine into so you'd require extra joinery work?

My machine is quite old now though, maybe 7ish years

Hi OP,

Seen as this is your first dishwasher, try not to get too excited over "bling" such as a cutlery draw or metal spray arms.

First is you budget. On MN it's very pay the most to get the best. It's bollocks, cheap can and does last. Our dishwasher is from 1989 and still going, never needed one repair. It's Electrolux, classed as cheap back in the day.

If you do go for expensive, you need top line. No point in buying a Bosch if you are going for their low/mid tier range. It will be cheap plastic shit anyway.

Go for a cheap brand but try to get their high tier range.
Most important is cycle times and how many cycles it has.
You don't want it to be washing for 3 hours just so it can use 1L of water. The wash results will be crap. You want a good wash cycle which uses water and runs for an acceptable time.

Nothing more stupid then having to soak your mugs in bleach because your dishwasher is shit and can't get tea stains out.

Another tip is to run your dishwasher off the hot water, if you can. This will save energy but also help with less wear to the heating element. In the winter water can be freezing coming in so even if your hot water takes a few seconds to come down the pipe it will still help.

eBay also do cheap dishwashers, some are cheap because they have a dent you won't see under the counter. You can also get brand new in perfect condition of course.

Appliances Direct are also good.

As for dishwasher tablets, it's very much like washing powder, you will need to try a few to find one you like. I like fairy platinum.

You will need dishwasher salt but rinse aid is optional, however both are cheap to buy.

Good luck with you shopping! GrinCakeBrew

I think you would have to have an existing kitchen unit to fit. Take out the internal base unit first and then attach a door to the dishwasher door but it's door that will go down to open Confused my brain is foggy this morning I have no idea if any of that makes sense
If your kitchen is already fully fitted then a freestanding one would be a better choice. You could still remove a unit to have it under your worktop.
It is a great dishwasher for the price. 🙂

if your going for integrated you'll have to sacrifice a cupboard and drawer. It'll need a water supply, access to drains and a socket - obvious place is next to the sink.

Choice of three black dishwashers here...

My last two were from John Lewis - Bosch one had to get (IIRC) 3 repairs , fairly minor until the last one where it was repairable
We'd taken out the JL extended guarentee so we got the price of the DW refunded and bought the new one (Neff) .
It was mainly because I wanted the cutlery drawer and there were only a couple that were fully intergrated+ drawer .
The others were Miele which are ££ (and my WM is a Miele and snapped its drive belt at a year so I'm giving them a swerve)

Can I just say a huge thank you to everyone who has taken the time to advise me! I’m so so grateful, I’ve never asked for advice on here before as haven’t been a member very long but wow I’m so appreciative of every single message Smile

Anyway so I’ve found one I like in Curry’s, it’s Grundig. What do we think of the brand? It’s a bit over budget at £400 ish but has everything we wanted. Also has a care plan incase it breaks. And I found a 10% off code!!! Plus can be delivered this week... So seems good. I don’t know!

Hi again, OP.

Grundig is made by Beko. They are a good budget brand, however you do pay more for the Grundig name. They are the same underneath.

If it has everything you want, plus the care plan, I say go for it.

10% off is always a plus too! Grin

I know a few people with Beko appliances, they seem pretty solid for the money. I used to sell them at Comet back in the day, we had far less problems with Beko appliances than with Hotpoint or Hoover (which were terrible).
