What do you put in your tumble dryer?

I just bought a tumble dryer as we don't have enough space to hang dry stuff. Finally, a house without mountains of laundry waiting to be done! Or so I thought.

Two loads of washing done today and none of it can go in the machine according to the labels. Kids pyjamas, cotton underwear, leggings, t-shirts. What the heck? What's the point of getting a machine if nothing can actually go in it.

Or do I ignore the labels and put it in anyway? When I was a kid I used to go to the laundarette with my mum and everything went straight from the washer into the dryer. Are clothes manufacturers just being over cautious?

I put everything in the tumble dryer, if it doesn't survive then I don't need it Grin

RoseDog · 05/11/2020 15:18

Everything except bras, as above if it doesn't tumble dry I don't need it!

sorryforswearing · 05/11/2020 15:21

Take care with things like trousers. Tumblers sometimes shrunk things lengthwise which I found a problem with as my son is very tall.

FatCatThinCat · 05/11/2020 15:21

I like it. That would work well for me as I wash everything on the same setting for similar reasons.

I'm surprised that those things can't go in. I always put the kids pyjamas, vests and babygrows in there and they come out lovely and soft. Always put my knickers in, some of husbands tshirts and our gym gear. I've noticed a lot of clothes from Zara can't be put in but I buy a lot of kids clothes from next and M&S and they're fine

Mrsjayy · 05/11/2020 15:30

I don't drysome jumpers but everything else is fair game my new dryer iput it on the programme then press the synthetics function so nothing is shrinking.

Mrsjayy · 05/11/2020 15:31

Oh my dh work trousers are flame retardant I don't dry those.

Bells3032 · 05/11/2020 15:32

Towels, sheets, pyjamas, leggings and underwear.

Normal clothes go on a drying buddy (heated clothes airer)

FatCatThinCat · 05/11/2020 15:32

I did notice a difference between brands. The M&S kids stuff says it's ok but all the H&M stuff says no, even though they seem to be made of the same materials. So I wondered if it was related to the poorer quality.

Anything that needs ironing is hanged cause I'm lazy and don't want to iron

20viona · 05/11/2020 15:34

Everything except wool. If it dies then sod it.

FatCatThinCat · 05/11/2020 15:34

What about fleecey stuff? Do they melt? DS would have a meltdown if I melted his Pikachu onesie.

No onsies I killed dds i saw a 20 year old crumble at the death of her onsie

actiongirl1978 · 05/11/2020 15:37

Everything but jeans which come out wrinkly, sheets which get twisted and wool jumpers.

Everything else in front of the Everhot or on the heated airer.

Shirta come out crease free if dried together but with nothing that isn't a shirt.

frazzledbasket · 05/11/2020 15:41

Everything apart from wool and any special pieces that were very expensive (not that I really own any).

I find most wash care instructions are just "suggestions" Grin and as above if it doesn't survive I don't need it - we've a small house and the tumble dryer is an absolute life saver with DCs.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 05/11/2020 15:41

I tumble everything bar dh's fancypants t shirts, apparently they are too good to be tumbled and have to be hung out or put on the bathroom radiator. Tbh this means I don't wash them either unless I am on a Laundry Spree and they are the last thing that needs doing.

As others have said if any thing shrinks or shrivels then they are not meant to be in my life.

I do only use the lower heat setting though, except for towels, I have a shitty Indesit dryer which was on the "may burn your house down at any given moment" list so I don't like to give it too much freedom on the heat front.

Gingernaut · 05/11/2020 15:43

Towels, sheets and bath robes

jeremypaxo · 05/11/2020 15:44

No silk, wool or cashmere and if it was expensive I'll probably line dry it. Everything else gets chucked in the drier.

Mrsjayy · 05/11/2020 15:45

You need to bring jeans out before the are dry then they don't go wrinkly

fastandthecurious · 05/11/2020 15:52

DH's work stuff as they come out weird. Everything else goes in and like PP said if it doesn't survive I don't want it anyway😂

DottyWott · 05/11/2020 15:59

I put in towels, bedding, jeans, T-shirtS if they are a thicker jersey and don’t have a vinyl print on them, knickers, boxers, socks

I find thinner jersey shrinks or the garment distorts, hemlines go wobbly. I hang anything polyester, fleece, joggings, leggings, school uniform (but I do put cotton shirts in), tights, bras.

theneverendinglaundry · 05/11/2020 20:18

Jeans always seem to shrink for me, I put everything in except jeans, bras, woolens and work shirts (not that I'm washing any of those these days!). Even if the label says 'do not tumble dry' it goes in!

I use a synthetic cycle for clothes and a cotton cycle for bedding and towels.

tempnamechange98765 · 05/11/2020 22:23

I use it a lot for DC clothes but I do tend to stick to the labels. As pp said a lot of H&M and Zara clothes don't dry. I've also had no luck with supermarket kids' pyjamas, always shrink.

Cecilia2016 · 06/11/2020 13:26

I put everything in my dryer and all the stuff are okay 😃

3rdNamechange · 06/11/2020 13:29

Everything except jumpers.
