How to keep white bedding white

Imtoooldforallthis · 03/11/2020 08:42

I have just bought some 600 tc sateen bedding in white. It isn't the most expensive out there but I would like to keep it white. I use a powder detergent along with a scoop of astonish. If I saw any stains I would treat them prior to washing. When I iron I noticed a couple of small marks, one looks like a coffee mark, the other just a random spot of colour, I would never of seen these prior to washing. What is the best thing to wash with. I often wonder how hotels keep their bedding clean.

Napisan!!

I use a generous scoop in all white washes but never with colours; buy it from Amazon, never seen it in a shop.. Good for soaking stains too (again, whites only).

Started using it some 20+ years ago when I waitressed in Oz - good for getting food/drink out of our white shirts.

Ace laundry bleach too is effective buy smells bleachy - as it would!

M0rT · 03/11/2020 13:44

I don't know if you have Milton in the UK but it is the same as Napisan and you can get in most supermarkets.

Also for pre wash stains Vanish Pink Stuff is excellent, got blood out of a patterned dress for me without removing any colour.

GuyFawkesDay · 03/11/2020 13:45

Definitely Ace for whites. Put it in prewash and use that Instead of an extra rinse cycle. The bedding gets to sit in the water containing the bleach a bit longer, and then it gets washed out with the detergent. No smell.

Milton

VanGoghsDog · 03/11/2020 13:47

Biotex - same thing really.

Laundry detergent, scoop of Biotex, lid fill of Zoflora, wash on 60deg min. Full two and a half hours wash.

Don't drink coffee in bed......

SorrelForbes · 03/11/2020 13:48

I wash my white bedding and white towels with biological powder (usually Persil but depends what's on offer!) on a 90 degree cotton cycle. I know that seems extreme to some but all my white bedding and towels are still as white as when I bought them (some are over 10 years old). I never put anything in with them that has the slightest bit of colour (e.g. lace trim, embroidery, piping).

DrGachet · 03/11/2020 13:48

Vanish (or Ocado own brand) for whites, just bung a scoop in every wash.

VitreousHumour · 03/11/2020 13:51

@SorrelForbes I do that but then am stuck for what to do with the stuff that is mainly white but has a trim/bit of colour?

SorrelForbes · 03/11/2020 15:48

@VitreousHumour I do a separate wash for those again on 60 or 90 depending on the dirt level! TBH, I try to avoid buying anything like that (all my bedding is plain white or blue/white stripe) so it's usually just some napkins with a silver trim and the kids' white pants with those stupid little bows!

Strawberrycreamsundae · 03/11/2020 15:53

I use bio washing powder (Ariel or Persia) 50° wash and a drop of fabric softener. My white bedding is as white as when new yet over 10 years old. I dry on the line as often as possible.

Strawberrycreamsundae · 03/11/2020 15:54

And never wash whites with anything coloured.

W3dontdoduvets · 03/11/2020 15:59

Never mix with anything but whites, Always bio powder, vanish crystal white powder, dry in the sun in summer to bleach. Perfect.

W3dontdoduvets · 03/11/2020 16:00

I’m known as the queen of the whites, in my family anyway 😂

Imtoooldforallthis · 03/11/2020 16:33

Thanks Everyone, always use bio powder with try crystal white and Milton.

I only ever wash white cotton on hot, with other white cotton and with whitener laundry cleanser. Also never leave it on the bed longer than a week max. It's never not clean afterwards.

Fluffycloudland77 · 07/11/2020 08:46

Crystal whites tested on animals. Astonish isn’t.

I use two scoops vanish, 1/3 more powder and the extra rinse button.

If there’s not enough powder or water (modern washers use hardly any) the dirt settles back onto the material.
