this may be a stupid question but i have got loads of ( was ) white towels. they are perfectly good towels but they have gone a bit grey, would like to dye them choc brown or any nice dark colour, any one done this before.

I've dyed a few things like that recently, the main problem is that often the stitching isn't cotton and won't take the dye. You might therefore end up with brown towels with white stitching. There's no way to be certain though that this is how they will turn out! Trial and error I'm afraid! It's a bit tedious but to solve the problem I've gone over the stitching with a permanent marker in the new colour afterwards.

how did you dye them. did you use a washing machine dye. ( never done this sort of thing before)

Yes. You get a box of Dylon (Woolies sell it, I think supermarkets do too), then you put that in the washing machine with a load of salt (tells you how much in the Dylon instructions). Then you just run it through a wash cycle. Very easy. Just make sure you run an empty cycle through afterwards to make sure all the dye has gone or it might stain your next load!

I dyed old terry nappies. The dye took very well, but did fade over time. I used a dylon washing machine dye.

i am going to try it on a few of the older towels first. fingers crossed

Should work fine. I use them all the time for blankets, clothes, towels, curtains etc.
Dylon

i have died lots of things (but not towels)

I used dylon 40C washing machine dye.... was REALLY Easy and really effective.

I did a really dark navy blue colour and used 4 sachets of dye per throw (giant throws for large sofa)

Make sure you weight the amount of fabric and sue enough dye otherwise it wont be as dark as you may want.

I was also brave and dyed them in a brand new washing machine but it was fine...

you wash with the dye.... then wash again and its all clean
(on the 3rd wash i did my navy blue bedding and stuck in a white cloth as well just to be sure but there was no trace of any blue having been left in the machine... there wasnt... even with 4 lots of dye being used)

alternativeky you could be a colour run remover to bleach them back to bright white

I dyed some 15 year old towels 3 years ago, using Dylon in the machine. They came out great, and are only now starting to look a little tired. Go for it!
