Bra washing

New bra says hand wash only. I didn’t bother before and stuck them in a normal wash but I’ve finally found a decent pretty-ish feeding bra and don’t want to ruin it and can’t afford to buy many. Delicate cycle in the machine or actually hand wash it?

I’d hand wash it unless I had other things to put in a delicate wash along side it -wouldn’t be running the machine for just 1 item

AnneLovesGilbert · 26/10/2020 11:40

I’ve got some poncy pillow cases that need a delicate cycle and DD’s grobags. Mainly debating being lazy and wondering if I’ll still damage it if it’s in the machine on any cycle.

I use a lingerie bag that's plastic with mesh around it to protect my nice bras ... think primark / amazon sold them for about £2 then I put them in one a delicate / hand wash in the machine.
But again; that's just what I do lol

Soak in bowl of soapy water leave overnight give a good swirl use a small nail brush to wash the underarm areas.
They last longer if you hand wash bras

StillWeRise · 30/10/2020 22:19

I was told to wash them in the shower, ie when you're in the shower wash the bra and rinse it under the shower

FoxtrotOscarPoppet · 30/10/2020 22:21

Mesh laundry bag and delicate cycle.

Cocomobile · 30/10/2020 22:28

Will definitely last longer and look nicer for longer if you hand wash. You’ll get away with machine washing but have to accept the bra will look more tattered sooner compared to hand washing

Hand washing isn’t really that onerous. Perhaps try it once and decide?

ruthieness · 31/10/2020 23:38

I use laundry disinfectant - just put a capful in 2 litres water - soak bra for 5 minutes - no need to “wash” or rinse - just hang up to dry!

Thanks for the tips. I’ve done it in the shower so far then over a towel on a heater to dry. Determined I’ll keep being responsible and my bras will thrive!

My Triumph bras go on for years in a normal machine wash.

Ginfordinner · 01/11/2020 09:11

I saw some bra wash bags in a shop the other day. You put your bra in one before putting it in a washing machine.

AnneLovesGilbert · 01/11/2020 09:22

Because it’s a nursing one its structure is less sturdy than a normal one. I’ve gone through loads with changing size and the bit that stays in place going baggy so cherishing it before I stock up, washing it and leaving it to dry overnight. I’m sure I have a delicates bag somewhere!

Crikey. Since having a mastectomy I have to have non wired bras with a pocket to hold a prosthesis. They all just get slung in the machine with everything else. I run everyday so they have to be changed frequently. The worst that happens is white bras can go a bit grey on the elastic bits if you do a mixed kit wash. Life is too short to get overly precious about stuff IMO.

ittooshallpass · 01/11/2020 09:56

I just put bras in a mesh bag and throw in the wash with everything else. All fine.

AnneLovesGilbert · 01/11/2020 10:13

I’m on a budget, nursing bras are quite expensive. I’ve had a bunch fail on me so I’m trying to make my things last. Of course it’s just stuff but this is in housekeeping so by its nature it’s nothing overly dramatic.

Could it be your particular washing machine that wrecks your bras @AnneLovesGilbert? I never hand wash my bras, and they last for years.

I guess that after your surgery willowywillow it kind of focuses what is really important to you. I hope you stay well.

willowywillow · 01/11/2020 12:56

Thanks, @Ginfordinner.

I hand wash mine. I get my bras from Bravissimo so they are quite expensive (£40) so I have to take care of them.

I just soak them in hot water with a bit of Ariel liquid, then rinse and line dry.

The bra fitter at Bravissimo told me that lingerie bags are to protect the machine not the bra.

ONOFF22 · 22/04/2021 11:16

mesh bags can be used to protect bras

I buy expensive bras and the ladies in the shop I go to always say to wash your bra in the shower and just use a baby shampoo to wash them and then let them air dry.
